After today I have once again wonder if I am wasting my time. See, what i deer hunt with is my grandfathers->then dads->no mine 12 ga model 12, winchester super X slugs, my rusty but trusty 93 k1500, and a portable stand. Well today another buddie stops over to sight in his new gun. A $1200 Benelli slug gun with a big ol scope, Some sabot slugs made in some other country I never heard of, driving a 2006 2500HD crew cab. Showed me some pics of his new deerstand, looks kinda like my 1st house on stilts. Oh my goodness, is that the secret, am I using obsolete equipment that the deer are resistant to. I dont know, I think I will stick to venison that cost me a few slugs and a liscence. Or does the best of the best make you a better hunter like some think the biggest and baddest equipment make you a better farmer. I think not. We'll seeI bet him a t-bone diner as well on best season. Tradition. Good SAFE harvest andhunting to you all.

It's all about ugly and functional at our place. It's 870's and 1100 Remington's affixed with slug barrels. We mow em' down every year like that. I don't see any reason to make a change to the equation...gotta stick with what works!

Back in the day when I was a lot younger, we hunted until we got our buck !

Now days it seems these guys spend all that money and only go hunting on opening day.

My brother (the quiet one) sat listening to my sisters-then-boyfriend talking at length about his high dollar gear, expensive gadgets and actic proven boots. The guy went on about guided hunts, his new Ford truck with color matching 4-wheeler, and his custom engraved and inlaid firearm.

Brother asked him if he a deer, and the guy said "No".

My brother informed said fella that he had, in fact, met his quota in buck and doe season. He said his secret was his $75 SKS and his worn out sneakers. The guy was dumbfounded.

I shoot a 10 year old rifle, hunt from the ground or a nice climbing deer stand someone left on my property years ago, wear blue jeans and a $5 cammo shirt from wal-Mart. I read last year where the average deer hunter spends $1300 hunting and averages hunting 12 times a season.

Dave,
Don't forget you need about $500 worth of designer deer hunting clothes too. heh heh
The opener is getting close!!
We're getting the fever here.
5 days and a wake up.
You must be in the shotgun zone?
We're in rifle zone 1A just south of Aitkin - area 154.
Good luck to you and yours.
Jerry

Guys (and gals) who hunt this farm run a pretty low profile operation. Blinds made of stumps, discarded pallets, corrigated cardboard stapeld on for windbreak..... They"ve been carrying the deer in on old Farmall with a worksaver and a pallet on the back, or an old 1984 farm pickup. . Sleeping on the couch, or air mattress on the floor...They do carry some good rifles, however. Many shots are in the 200+ yard range. They load their own ammunition, cheaper, and tested for the particular guns.

Hope they get some - those deer are a nuisance in and around my pasture! Besides, they"re not very tolerant - heard one telling another that I was the ugliest looking deer that he"d ever seen... I think I"m pretty handsome!

Sounds like the guys around here. Seems to be a competition as to who can spend the most. The problem with these guys is that they couldn't hit the broadside of a barn even if they were standing inside it.
