Grew up on a 49 A and it pulled a Athens 5 disk tiller all day in heavy clay soil in 4th gear.

No water pump, no live hydraulics, no real three point hitch, no live pto, no power steering and a single barrel carburator..... why? The 60/620/630 for similar money you can have more HP, better fuel efficiency, less plug fouling, live hydraulics, optional live pto, optional power steering and on the 620/630 a factory built modern three point hitch.

Hey Buick, Whaddya call "similar money"? From what I've seen you can easily buy a a good running "A" around here (SC WI) between 1K and 1500. You won't touch a 620/30 for less than 4K and pry closer to 5000.

I should have been clearer. Around here an A and 60 run pretty close in bucks and a optioned out 60 just makes an A look sick. A 620 may go $1500 more, which is mighty economical for even more HP than the 60 and a proper three point hitch. The 630's do run up in your liste price range. Personally I think of the 20 and 30 series as the same tractor, just cosmetics are different.

Guess it depends on the type of ground that you have. We have anything from nice loam to red & blue clay. My last A was a 51 and at times it had it's hands full with 2-14s as did my M IH and the 77 Olivers in the area. Pulled a 9ft disc.

John deere a was rated at 35 drawbar horsepower this makes it a 3 bottom tractor it is capable of handling a 12 disk. happy deere what gear can you pull your 2 bottom in i was doing 3rd with hardly any throttle with myn but its an eraly styled tractor. an a is a hard tugging tractor with alot of power plenty of weight good to work on and find parts for dont neccesarily care for the frame though if it was me i would try and find a 620 or 630 it is the same size but more power and confort, if you want to spend a little more i think you would be alot happier with it if your goig to work it. it really depends on the acrage if your doing a garden i use my h for that on about a 3 ace garden and it does fine

620's and 630's are 10 HP bigger, but your right about the comfort issue. The live power, live hydraulics, power steering, float ride seat, and three point are a great improvement.

It will probably handle 2-16's and an 8-10 ft disc. If you like older John Deeres I'd go for it, but if your looking for a working tractor, you can probably find something more capable for not much more money. Josh

We pullled a 3x16 JD hyd in 2nd gear for years but 3x14 would have been better. It was the same with a disc, we had a 12ft but the neighbors 10ft pulled a lot better. The bigger equipment was realy for our 70.

maybe he LIKES the model "A"...and I really doubt a 620 comes near an "A" by a thousand bucks... not many people have a whole lot of money like most collectors with dupont paint jobs do...

An A and 60 go for within a few hundred bucks of each other.
