Hart Parr was the first company formed soley for making tractors. They claimed to invent the word tractor. On the I.D. tags it reads founders of the tractor industry. The Froelich tractor was notable but not sucessful.

In 1892 John Froehlich made the first gasoline tractor to propel itself backward as well as forward.

As far as a gasoline engine tractor...I'll take a stab and mention the 1889 Charter / Rumley.

What's the prize for the correct answer?

If we are talking internal combustion engines, it is probably the Charter/Rumely. 6 were manufactured in 1889. The credit for the first really commercially successful tractor went to the Froelich.
