I have to remove the distributor on my Ford 2000 3 cyl. gas tractor. I have been to told to make a mark in the direction the rotor is pointing before I take it out. Not sure where to make the mark. One the top of the distributor (the round area) that the dust cover sets in? Not really anywhere on engine to make a mark. Thanks Brian

If you are simply removing the distributor to repair it, and will NOT be turning the engine over with the distributor "OUT", you can simply turn the engine over until the rotor is pointing in a direction that's easy to remember, such as directly towards the engine block, or straight forward. (If the engine WILL be turned over with the distributor "OUT", you'd best take the extra time, and heed old's remarks to locate #1 TDC, and note EXACTLY where the rotor is now pointing.)

Drop it back in so the rotor winds up pointing in the same direction.

Also, make an pair of "match marks" on the distributor, and the engine block, so you can get the distributor HOUSING back in as near as possible to it's original location, too.

That should get the timing close enough to get the engine to run, then finish up with a timing light.

If you can get the engine at TDC on #1 piston. Then with a marker of some sort mark the distubutor as to where the rotor is pointing. Any place on the side of it will work just fine.

By marking the distributor in the direction the rotor is pointing do you mark the round part at the top where the dust cover is sitting? Not sure about this. Thanks again.

You remove the cap and the dust cover then make a line in the side of the distubutor as to where the rotor is pointing. My self I never worry about marking it but I have been working on engines for 35-40 years now and don't need to mark them to get them back in the right way

ok. the rotor is pointing toward the rear clip that hold the cap on. Is this a good to use as a reference point?

Well thats a yes and no. You have 2 clips so if you turn the shaft when you have it out you could end up putting it back in on the wrong clip. Now if you mark that clip yes then it would work

Only if you mark the base of the distributor and the enging in that location (base of distributor) to get it back to that same spot, because you are removing your index (clip)with the dist. JimN

Bottom line to what they are saying is this. The exact direction the rotor is pointing AND the exact position where the dist housing base bolts on MUST be marked AND recorded so it goes back in EXACTLY where it came out from. Also chalk mark the fan belt/pully so you can make sure the engine hasn't turned slightly before you put it back in. Just HOW you do all this is up to you,but this is what you need to do.
