This is probably the only time I can think of where you are NOT better off with really heavy cables. Smaller cables can soak up some of the voltage difference by getting warm.

James, Im definitely with Old on this one, Ive seen 6 volt batteries blow up when jumped with a 12 volt battery and can NOT recommend this course of action, i.e. do it at your own risk!!!!! !!! Im NOT saying it doesnt work and hasnt been done mind you, Im ONLY warning you it can be dangerous!

That being said, if you do jump its still + to + and - to - concerning the batterys regardless whichever battery post happens to be connected to the huge hunk of tractor iron. If you did jump say a negative ground truck to a positive grounded tractor (still + to + and - to -) dont let the truck and tractor iron frames come into contact with each other.

Nowwwww w as far as jumping to start a 6 volt tractor with another 12 volt battery, the safer way to do it is jump the STARTER ONLY that way ONLY the starter gets 12 volts NOT the 6 volt battery. To do that attach the - of the jumper battery direct to the starter post (if you can get to it) that would be the downstream (to starter NOT to battery cable) side of a starter switch or solenoid,,,,, ,and then when youre ready for the starter to spin attach the other jumper cable thats hooked to the + terminal on the jump battery to a clean non paint non rust frame ground on the tractor near to the starter and AWAY from the tractor battery cuz there can be some serious sparks going on. Soon as she starts remove the cables..... ..

USE CAUTION AS THESE ARE HIGH CURRENT POTENTIALLY ARCING N SPARKING JUMP CONNECTIONS

Best wishes,

John T

Yes you can, but should you? Your safety should be the most important thing to keep in mind. The only time I perfer to hear the sound "KaBoom" is when I pull the trigger on the shotgun and I watch another white wing dove fall to earth. That being said, I would use a battery charger with a 6/12 volt capability. Mine does, and also has a setting for a quick charge.

12 (+)positive is hooked to the ground on the 6 volt tractor.I usually try to find a bolt or something to clamp the jumper cable to to. and I like to attach that cable last.
12(-) negative is hooked to the starter cable where it is bolted to the switch. But be careful, especially if there is any gasoline anywhere besides inside the system..Sparks are very likely to occur .and BOOM!

Yep, I have "boomed" a 100 jumping it, had a dripping fuel bowl, had vapor in the bell housing I guess, anyhow it exploded in there. Rang my ears, scorched my hair, and exploded so hard it blew all the leaves away on the ground under the access hole... Took me a while to figure out what happened, then it was a little funny since not harm had been done and everything else imaginable had already happened to the tractor before it blew up.... matt.

Yes and no. You NEVER hook the jumper cables from the 12 volt battery to the 6 volt battery or it can blow up in your face. What you do is find a good spot on the tractor frame to hook the ground and then you hook the other one right to the starter, the post that when you touch it the starter spins up. Make sure its out of gear you you can be run over by the tractor.

 Remember + to + and - to - in reply to old, 10-26-2006 17:59:19
What old said and remember. Minus to minus and plus to plus always. It does not matter which pole is ground when jumping. As long as the two vehicles are not touching one does not know which pole is ground on the other.
