Weaning calves. Keeping the calves untill at least after the first. Vet is coming on Tuesday to preg check the cows and then I'll probably be selling off 75 of those due to drought.

Found a job for the B. Going to put some corn in the bin for a neighbor whose place I farm. He likes to fatten a couple steers over the winter, so I said I'd put a couple loads in for him. Still waiting on a front tire for it. David

How many cows do you run Dave?

With all the hay you bale why not feed some to the cows to hold you over thru the drought?

Just wondering Gary

I have about 225 pairs right now, and typically I would just feed them, but I made contracts to deliver so much hay to certain customers. In a typical year I would have had plenty, but its unbelievably dry here. I dug up a water line that was 5' deep yesterday to install a hydrant and I never hit moisture. My dryland pastures never even grew this year. The price I got for the hay was really good so that helps some. I'm thinking I might just make it a permenant cut in the herd number and sell more hay on a yearly basis. Plus that means fewer cows to feed, calve, doctor, brand, etc.

Thats good enough for me.

I use to raise a lot of hogs.

One year corn went to 3.25 in June so I sold what I thought I wouldn't need for feed.

Guess what I ran out in early Sept. and had to buy 3.50 corn to feed my hogs for acouple of weeks.

Gary

The big cattle operations had had unlimited use of open range for years, then the gommint started parceling out the land to homesteaders who were farmers (sodbusters). The farmers were putting up fence which the cattlemen would cut. The cattlemen claimed all the unbranded calves etc. The cattlemen would try to have farmers prosecuted as cattle thieves but there were more farmers than cattlemen so farmers were on the juries and always voted to acquit. Exasperated, the cattlemen hired an ex Pinckerton agent named Tom Horn to come in and dispense some frontier justice with his (then new) Winchester .30-.30. Most of the guys Horn picked off were genuine cow and horse thieves but someone shot the young son of a farmer and Horn was blamed and got the long drop, short rope treatment. That's the short version.

Gary, ir was a big old feud back in the 1800's in Wyoming. Just google "Johnson County cattle Wars and get set for some very interesting reading. Same as the Lincoln County Wars down in the southwest that brought the best out in Billy the Kid. Harley

Nice hopper!
What do you put down under it? Dirt and grain inside a bin don't mix well, I've found.

Good lookin' B there.

I think its on a concrete pad, but I don't know. Its not my bin or my auger they both belong to the neighbor. I just provided the tractor to power it.
