Ok, wise men and women, What is better for sandy soils. Spreading layer poultry manure on frozen ground and incorperating into the soil in spring, or piling then spreading in spring and immediatly incorperating. Previous owners have always spread in winter and plowed under in spring, but doing some research i found that spreading the manure on frozen ground will lead to 80% loss of the nitrogen. What have ya all found to be best practice. My yearly clean out is in winter months so not many other options

Spreading on wet or frozen ground just washes the soil nutrients into the local water shed and ground water table.

Watch it with that. Round here in IA the rules changed a couple years back. Can't dump it on frozen ground. Can't even dump it in the fields unless you knife it in. People complain about the smell, and the DNR guy comes a-callin'. Know a guy complaining about the fine a year ago.

In Western Kansas ( with a lot of Sandy Ground ) we may pile at edge of field in fall and winter - but when it comes time to put in on the ground we also put it IN the ground ASAP. To much hot sun and wind will dry in totally out and the nutrients leave.

Dave,
Being a soil mechanic, I would layer it.
1. Place some leaves or straw down about 6" water it to dampen it. 2. Place 6" Poop on top of that
3. Place 2" soil on top of that
4. Continue the above steps 5. The more organic material you can incoporate the better
6. The pile needs air, water as a squeezed out sponge and with a tractor you can pile and turn frequently. In the spring you will have the best possible soil amendment possible.

I can pile in MN in winter for 3 months with no issues, otherwise I will need to pour a slab and create a bunker.

Yup, spread it right before the plow. We still haul some in the winter, but most of it gets piled and hauled out in the spring and fall. If it's gonna be corn we'll haul some before getting it ready for planting, otherwise the rest we spread on the corn stubble and the hay feilds before we plow them.

Spread in the spring and plow as soon as possible. Get all you can for nitrogen... cost too much to buy!!!!! Up here in Vermont it is against the law to sread after Dec. 15th... You can spread after April 1st. Run off is a big issue.

Or perhaps as high as 90% loss.

Spread and plow down as soon as possible. Just going thru the motions, otherwise.

However, that chiken-ship is some hot stuff; has been known to burn a crop.

So, it IS better to pile it and leave it "ferment" till the ground thaws and then spread it and till in? That is kinda how I am leaning, for the ground that is not gonna be no-tilled. It is pretty much straight poop, less than 3% shavings and last year was 12 cemi loads which I sold. Should be a bit more this January.

Yes Sir,

That's the way I'd do it. With any kind of manure too. I always tried to turn it in the same day as I spread if at all possible.

If it just lays there on top of the ground, ya loose all the goodies and it's really turns to sh!t. :>)

(In my garden), I would try to get it in the ground and tilled in so as to break down the straw and other fibers before planting in the spring.

But that's my opinion, completely unscientific!
