I have one of those salamander 155,000 btu kerosene heaters that says it can also burn #1 fuel oil. Is diesel fuel the same thing?
Kerosene is so darned expensive.

I have a reddy heater that burns kerosene or diesel or fuel oil. Kerosene is supposed to burn cleaner but costs a lot more. I use diesel and haven't noticed any black smoke or fumes. I'll probably have to clean the internals more though. You can get kerosene a lot cheaper if you go to a bulk fuel supplier. Same thing with varsol. The difference between #1 and #2 is winter or summer. The suppliers tanks usually have winter fuel in them early so it won't gel. Summer fuel gives more power and better economy in engines. Hope this helps. Dave

#1 fuel and # 1 diesel are the same. Jet fuel and kerosene are similar and will work also.

Have a jet space heater, supposed to run kero or #1 fuel. Friend borrowed it and it came back with diesel in it. Burned OK, but filled the shop with so much smoke you couldn"t breathe or work in there. There"s a reason for kerosene!

Ok, I called the local fuel suppliers, here is what I found.

Seems the suppliers bring in #1 diesel around November when they have storage after the farmers are done with harvest, they mix it with #2. I can't buy just #1 diesel at the pumps around here.

Called the airport and Jet A is $3.90 a gallon
Kerosene is $3.60

I found this info below interesting.

Hi Randy,

If you want to learn about fuel oil then use a good source of info like the Chevron link I've posted below.

That link you gave don't know what there talking about.

Yes, it will work, and work well. #1 diesel is what I burn in mine all the time. Never did use kerosene.

Price out Jet A-1 at the airport. I've seen it cheaper than kerosene at Bubba's Bargain Shop. Th stuff burns clean and is pure.

Yes,

# 1 diesel is burner fuel.

Your burner will function on either number 1 or 2, but will smoke a bit on the number 2, as it is thicker.

#2 will gel in the cold also.

No. Diesel is #2 same as fuel oil. It is a bit heavier than #1 kerosene. Winter diesel is #2 cut with #1 to improve cold flow properties.
As to whether or not your salamander will burn diesel well I don't know. You will have to check with the maker.

My understanding is the same as mjbrown and glennster. In my part of the country, the Diesel/heating fuel is #2 year round.

#1 is lighter than dielsel, i think diesel is #2. you could use furnace oil which you can buy in bulk from your fuel supplier. i tried diesel in a torpedoe heater and it burned up the igniter
