i have a question for anyone who the answer. A few months ago we bought an old john deere the guy we got it from said it was from the 70's. The decal on the side said 820. I was looking at some pics of other 820's and the info said they were made in the late 50's and they dont look like the one i have. Does anyone know if the 820 was made in the 70's too. I really dnt know too much about old tractors, all i do is use them.

Joseph,

This is an 820. They were the next evolution of the John Deere 80 and were built in the late 50s.

A huge tractor in their day.

And, here's the 70's 3-cylinder "820", from an ebay auction:

The 820/830 utility tractors with the three cylinder 152 cube diesel engines were Manhiem, Germany built/designed. I think a few 830s were also built in Dubuque though. Deere also sold them - with a few changes as the 1020 ag. tractor or 300 industrial that were US built. The 1020s and 300s were also available with 138 cube gas engines - and had different hydraulic systems that the German tractors. We sold 1020s and 300s new during the mid-60s - and sold 820 and 830 German tractors new in the early 70s.

Deere made the two cylinder 820 in 1957 and 1958. They used the same 820 number in late 1969 to 1973 I think it was with a smaller three cylinder. The 830 was the same way. If you buy parts be sure and have your serial number with you becouse you may get the parts for the wrong tractor.
