It is weaning day at the Cowman's. Makes sweet music to my ears. The calvies are gone but the mammas are raising a ruckus. Ave weight 530 straight through. Not too bad for a dry summer. I had some good friends that had to wean in August as they were out of grass.

Cowman thats a darn good weight.

Don't think mine will weigh that and I had good pasture.

Do you use a creep feeder?

Gary

No, I don't believe in buying creep. That's just grass and mamma's good milk.

This mite be a stupid question.

My neighbor (whom raises cows) keeps talking about
putting up a creep feeder. What is it.
Can you point me to some pictures.

He makes it sound like something that can be built.
I mite suprise him with one this year.

A creep feeder is a feeder placed out on pasture and filled with grain or a pelletized ration for the calves. The feeder will allow only calves in, not cows. This allows calves to put on additional pounds while still on pasture.

I bought one this year. I'll try to attach the link.

Ok, I see what it is now.
He has the feeder. Works like a big bird feeder.
Fill it up with feed, and as they eat it more drops in the pan.
But he just has the feeder.
And he has a special gate made of 2x4's with slots
big enough for calfs to walk thru but not cows.
He just needs a lot to set it all up in.
Put the feeder in the lot and put the gate up.
The calfs can get in but the bigger cows can't.

I may offer to fix it all up for him.
I think his creep feeder needs some work.
And setting up a lot is easy.

Thanks.

I'd say ya done good considering the severe drought down in your neck of the woods. We're selling steers and the 8th and heifers on the 15th. Hope the weather doesn't get too yucky.
