Grease in steering box ???

Although my owner's manual says to use 140w gearlube on an old Massey Harris that I have here, when I took it all apart I noticed that it had regular grease inside as a lubricant. The operator's manual says "not" to use grease since it has limited lube qualities in that application. I have spoken to a fellow who said the grease is the way to go (he specified to use the white lithium type which is a bit more viscous), especially since the leakage out of the box will be reduced. I have installed new seals when I had everything apart. What would some of you guys recommend?

The steering box on my 86 dodge (no power steering) has grease in it, from factory. Some years ago I removed one of the bolts holding a cover on it, drilled a small hole through the bolt lenghwise, and installed a grease fitting in the head of the bolt. Now when Igrease the truck I grease the steering box a few strokes of the gun. Grease does work it's way outpast the output shaft, so I know it is full of fresh grease. I would use gear lube in a new box unless it leaked though or had grease in it from factory as mine did. I also had to rebuild, to repair rust and water damage, the unusual universal joint in the steering shaft. Put a grease fitting in it too to fluch out water and keep it full of fresh grease. It is a "T" type of U joint and it also can telescope to allow for any changes in the length of the shaft.

Get some corn head grease. John Deere sells it for corn head gear boxes ,but we use it in the old tractor steering boxes.

Mike is correct corn head grease will lubricate and not leak a perfect lub for gear boxes etc. It comes in 3 viscositys O, OO and OOO, a little expensive but you will save in the long run.

If you replaced the seals so it won't leak, go with the gear lube.

i'd use the 140 ube like the manual states. usually what happens is the seals wear and start leaking, then someone puts gun grease in there. its real common on the farmall m+h front bolsters too.

If your seals will hold now, I would use the 140 weight oil as reccomended, if it still leaks though you might want to try Lucas Red and Sticky grease. it works great in that type of application.
