Hello all I have a Kubota 3710 that has about 6800 hours on it. The problem that I have is the 4wd front end is completly worn out. The cost of a new or rebuild unit is too much as the tractor scrapes the freestall twice a day and 4wd is not needed. We just need a 2wd axle to put under it so it can get the job done. Scraping with the skidsteer is too much wear and tear. I dont want to spend a lot of money on this project as the tractor, even though its only a few years old, is not worth a lot. The motor runs like a top and rearend is tight and sound (the cheap sheetmetal is all rotted off though)lol. Cow manure is corossive stuff. So if anyone knows of a 2wd front axle that will fit i will appreciate the suggestions. It can be kubota or any other brand for all i care. I just need a cheap retrofit so i can put the tractor back in service.

Matt,

You didn't say exactly what was wrong with the axle.... so I'll just speculate. If the steering joints, king pins/bushings are good... or at least repairable cheaply, and the wheel bearings good, why not just haul out all the FWD gearing and such parts and run it as a 2 wheel drive. Pack the bearings with grease and stog the holes up to keep the dirt out... or some combination therof. You might try the expandable type frost plugs to fill the axle holes up. That would hold oil too.... I'm assuming that there was some drive failure here rather than an outright axle failure. Anyway, just throwing that idea out there.... and it does leave you the option of fixing it sometime if you want.

I must admit though, you are the FIRST Kubota owner that ever admitted that the bevel gear front end wore out. I always hear about how they last forever, and how stupid I am running planetary front ends and such... It's nice to hear the truth occasionally. Good luck.

Rod

Hello Rod,

Everything is worn right out. I jacked the front end up and the whole rigth front outer assembly fell off. We have had both of the front hubs pull right out while driving too. We have been running it as a 2wd axle for quite a while. Finally the whole thing just became trashed. Bearings broke and got caught up locking the frontend up. None of this was from lack of maintainence. I feel that these tractors are made for the weekend farmer and not for the abuse that day to day can bring on the farm.

We are talking about a 3710 here. It is not a monster of a tractor by any means. I don't think you'll find anything else it's size any tougher. If you want something for heavier farm work get an M series.

I"d talk to a good blacksmith/weld shop. Front axle out of an older solid-axled truck would probably lend itself to an inexpensive lash-up.
