Hi Guys,

Nice day here today, so I'm moving in some wheat straw from about 15 miles away and building a poor man's windbreak.

One load down and three to go. :>)

Looks like a perfect day for that job! Nice to see the ol Hydro getting a little work. That ought to make a good windbreak. The little beefers will have the ground worn out near that row come winter. Nice work.

You only haul 11 straw bales at a time? My calculation shows a bit over 10,000 pounds for the load, plus the weight of the trailer. If you have a PowerStroke in that pickup, it should just be playing!

We haul at least 14 alfalfa bales at time, about 1100 to 1200 pounds each on our gooseneck trailer. Trailer is rated for 17,000 pounds and we max it out. Never had a problem running 65 mph with the 98 Cummins, and the 06 Cummins just plays with it. For the short hauls we use the 82 Dodge with just a little 318 gas and go a little slower.

Back on topic, flax straw bales make good wind break material - they don't deteriorate. Our neighbor even made a couple of calf shelters out flax straw bales. :o)

Hi Steve,

The truck and trailer handled the chores just fine.

I had to bring this straw in from across the Pine Ridge.

If you could see that terrain and knew what I had to pay for this stuff, you'd probably understand why I wanted the top tier tied with a single bale.

Oh yeah, I completely understand. My comments were more directed to those below that think your truck had a load on!

We have a 25' trailer with racks on it, 5 bales long on each side and 4 on the top - or 5 if it's a long haul and then strapped on.

Darn FEATHER MERCHANT haulen only 11 bales. We use to load 29 1000 lbs bales on my 28 foot gooseneck and haul them 9 miles , i real hate runnen half empty . and on the grain trailer we would get 14 on it plus 4 on the truck there was usualy around 250-300+ bales to haul on first cutting .

Didn't they build houses with straw out there on the prairie once upon a time?

There's a church in Arthur Nebraska made out of straw bales. Built in 1928. There is also a house there, too about a block away from the church.
