I enjoy reading the forum postings. My fascination of vintage iron came on strong 5 years ago. Just wondering how long some of you have had the old iron bug.

When I was o years old and growing in 1949, The new Red Iron was a M and an F-20. As I got even older, it became a Super H and a 350U. Those are still the New Iron!!! JimN

Anyone trying to make a living farming now days or stay afloat has no choice but to run a lot of the old iron along with the new. Many peoples newest modern equipment may be 20 years old too. If all new you'll never make it and be in the poor house before you ever get started.

Started in 1991 with an F12 that we bought from a friend. Went at it pretty good for about 3 years, gathered up a decent collection and slowed way down. I've only added about 1 tractor every two years since then...

I guess I'm late with my post but will go anyway. Both of my grandfathers were farmers in the midwest and from the beginning I couldn't get enough of being around the farms. I farmed then as a teen, but it didn't work out for me to be a "real" farmer so I have restored several of my grandfather's implements, tractors, and truck. My 3 year old son Jeb is right in my footsteps and can't stop talking about his recent ride in a combine harvesting 12 rows of corn at a time!

I'm almost 59. When I was younger and someone else was paying the bills I liked the new fancy stuff. Now that it is my money the old stuff works fine. Especially if it's not green. (Green stuff works good but I can't afford that green paint). LOL

Don't think it is a bug; more of a perception.

50-year-old iron works just as well as the new, painted, expensive stuff. :>)

Lot of younguns out there. I started with a couple of farm horses and when we got our firsdt tractor in 41 (Farmall A) I waas in heaven or at least I thought I was cause all I had to do was crank the A, not bridle up the horses etc. I was 9 then and was king of the hill. Moved on to h's and M's but now I am back to the old iron for fun and games . just 75 years young.

I was born in 1942. I grew up on the farm. Dad started me out with the AC Model M crawler pulling the spring tooth harrow.Seams like there was always something to fix, this got me interested in mechanical things. I joined the Navy in 64, and was a aircraft mechanic. Got out in 68. Dad had stopped farming about this time, and just did custom discing for others. I took over Dad's business when he was no longer able to continue. I worked nights, and was able to do my tractor work during the day. I retired a couple months ago. I still use some of his old equipement, but have added a few rubber tired tractors just for mowing. My old tractors are not good looking just old working tractors. I also have my Indian Motorcycles to keep me busy. Stan in calif

My dad retired from the navy in 1960, I was three. He bought an 80 acre farm in NE Arkansas to be between his family in Kansas and my mother's family in Alabama.

His first tractor there was an C Allis, that wide seat made plenty of room for me to ride. Other tractors came and went but we never had anything new.

Dad's health is now failing at the age of 86. I have basically take over his tractors and equipment. As far as real old iron I have a 1937 MM ZTU trying to get started on restoring. Don't know much about this tractor, but I thinks it will look good when done.

I work full time for USDA, volunteer fire chief, active in church and run a few cows.

I'm older than most, younger than some, my Dad didn't let me do anything but drive the tractor, 1949 IH H, if it broke, I had to call, walk to the house to get him, so he could asess the damage. Got out of the Navy in '65, had a job in a gas station, made more money than any job in SW Iowa, learned mechanics. In '88, got my first MM, since, probably had 40, only have 10 now, enjoy all, have my Grandads '60 MF TO35 also, my neighbors think I'm crazy, still bale my own hay, no thrower, just me, do my own mechanical work, having a great "retirement".

Well I am only 39 but I started on my mothers small horse farm with an Oliver 66 and a John Deere 60. Parents gave up doing hay when I was a little kid but we kept the 60 and that old two cylinder is what I started farming with on my own once I got out of college and started leasing my own land and a place to farm out of. I started plowing with a one row trailer plow and then moved up to a Oliver radex 3 bottom and a oliver 10 foot disk, and an International 42 planter - all old iron. I still still use the John Deere 60 to pull my hay rake all summer long.

I've play with/ fix them up since around 1980 when I moved to the farm I live on now. This place 44 arces was mostly my parents place till a few years ago then they gave me the land. I have plowed this place with my 1935 JD-B way back in the late 70s when I was home on leave from the navy and I guess thats when it started with me. Now that I'm retired I can spend a lot more time playing with this old iron

You know what they say, you can take the farm away from the boy but you cant take the farm outta the boy. I was born with the gene but thought I would move to the city and make good money. Guess the love of the land and machines was too strong.

I am a relativley young guy in here. I was born in 79, yes im only 27. I grew up in Wichita, KS, the big city. Never layed a hand on a tractor in my life until I met my now wife. We dated for a bit and then she let me come on out to her place, and this is where i found out she had inherited 40 acres and the house, all paid for in full..lol Boy did I strike it lucky. Anyhow, my wifes dad grew up in Colorado around old internationals and fords. After helping him around the farm and learning the ropes, i got hooked, and I got it bad!!! I now have a 1962 Fordson Super Major, and a 1951 Ferguson TO20.I tore down the Fordson and rebuilt alot of it, and am currently doing the same to my ferguson. It helps that I was a Heavy equipment mechanic for Uncle Sam in the Army for 3 years. I also worked for a Freightliner service Dept for about 3 years. I apply alot of that knowledge, along with the help of some of you "older" guys in here to nurture my addiction to old iron...lol And it doesnt stop there, as my kids grow up and move away in the future, I am sure I will end up littering this old farm with multiple old iron machines. My next yearning calls to the tune of a John Deere unstyled B, That will be my next treasure hunt!! Thanks guys!!

Aren't you born with the gene? It just takes some people longer to bring it to the surface.

It sure wouldnt pass muster with the safety police but I grew up on old iron, literally. My mom and dad always worked full time public work (dad was superintendent of schools, mom an English teacher). When I was a toddler I rode on my dads lap when he was mowing hay went to sleep listening to a 4000 Ford gas engine and the rythmic clickety clack of a JD 5 sickle mower. I remember watching him repair and sharpen sickles on the carport of our house in town. When I was 3, I greased the bed of his pickup truck trying to help, lol. Then for Christmas that year I got two heifer calves.

I was born in 1967 so guess that makes it better than 35 years. I started farming with dad in 1982 as an FFA project and bought my own place in 1987.

All my life(47 yrs.) Long before I was allowed to drive tractors, I was "fixing" throttle springs, seat brackets, battery covers, pto guards, etc. I always noticed things that were falling apart...needing repair. To this day, maintenance/mechanical work is among my favorite things to do.
