Finally got a opportunity to kill one of these crows that has been eating my pecans (that’s "pa cons" not "pee cans").

So anyway the neighbor across the street comes outside when she hears the shot and sees me tying this dead bird on a sting from the tree to try and keep away other crows.

I can hear her yelling something to me but ignore her and go inside only to hear my 16 year old daughter tell me..... .....
"You are not really going to leave that thing hanging from the tree. What will my friends think when they come over here"

What’s a guy to do????? ????

So what, just hanging a crow from a tree. I used to live in and belong to a volunteer fire dept back in Nebraska. I don't know if they are still doing some of the haunted house (fundraising) stuff we used to do years ago. PETA would have a fit, even though we used roadkill. Imagine having a (dead) snake, coon or possum drop from a ceiling panel when the group going through stepped on the release panel. Anyhow, at least you aren't TRYING to scare PEOPLE, just more birds. Some people just need to, as the Eagles song said, get over it.

About that pronunciation in reply to john in la, 10-20-2006 13:53:05
This is the INTERNET and everything (at least on this site) is print only. No audio!

Who cares how you pronounce it. Just spell it so everyone knows what you mean (well, pelling "pecan" is obvious but there are other words with multiple pronunciations depending on region).

As for the Pecans, Yum Yum. As for the crow? Shoot the critter. Animal pests in your crops are a bad thing whether it's deer in the corn, racoons in the sweet corn, or crows in the pecans and if the local "animal rights activists" don't appreciate your efforts to save your crop, that's too bad. Let THEM move back to downtown Manhatten( and I do mean New York, not Kansas) if they don't like it. That goes for the ones who object to "organic fertilization" programms for your fields too!

It's your job as a parent to embarass your teenage children. Keeps 'em humble. Keep up the good work.

I'm not mad at you, but it's (pee-cans) here in south Ga. However you say it is fine as long as I can (con) get a belly full of 'em.:)

Now if you want some real shooting, stick a plastic owl out with that dead crow. Oh, and bring a case of shells and a sholder pad. Even more fun is you have a crow call that features 2 crows fighting an owl.

Hello Dave;
Think I read a while back that you left the south and moved way up north.
If I remember correctly it was the Alexandria area.
Hope every thing went well with your move and you have settled into the new place.

Tell your daughters it`s one of those cool gothic things. Tell the neighbor it`s a halloween decoration. Then tell your daughters boyfriend(if she has one) that the next branch over is reserved for anyone who disrespects your daughter. That should get everyone in an uproar.

Well this halloween decoration is going over about as good as the one I had a few years ago.

I built a decoration that I saw on the internet.

It was two pumpkins on sticks about waist high.
Below the pumpkins was a pair of pants stuffed with hay and the rear facing the road.
Above the pumpkins was a shirt stuffed with hay.
From the road it looked like someone with a pumpkin but t mooning the people passing on the road.
The neighbor across the street loved that one. So much so she said she was going to call the cops if I did not take it down.

Rejoice! My Dad hated them - he could have compromised but when they got full of newly sprouted corn they went on down the row pulling a bunch more up.

Tell your neighbor that she can kiss your grits. Tell your daughter that those pacons are what is buying her Ipod. I always said ifn somebody ain't payin my bills then they got no place telling me what I can and can't do. Living way out in the hills here in the Ozarks has worked very well for me. Ya wanna pee ofn yer deck ya just go for it. Ya wanna take a shot at a buzzard, the flying kind, ya just go fer it. Well you get my drift. Good luck with the critics. Harley

Good thing you explained about "the flyin' kind" cause the buzzards 'round here carry briefcases and speak of "quid pro quo, pro bono" and other gibberish.... Just my $0.02
