Does anyone use cattle guards in the ground instead of gates? Do they work well? I would think it'd be ok on really open ground, but where cattle frequent it might cause problems. Any thoughts?

We used to have to cross our dairy herd over a paved road to bring them in. When they would paint new lines on the road during the night it would be about impossible to get the first few cows to cross the double yellow lines the next moring to bring them in. It was quite a sight to see.....Jim

in-to-deep, If you are haveing one built make sure it is about 7ft accross anything less will make it too easy for an animal to jump accross. If it is in the 5ft range then it is just about worthless! Hope this helps.

Naw not building one, just my mind a-wandering. I've thought about building one for the sheep we have but never did. Anyone looking to buy 7 bred Cheviot ewes? Should be ready to go in about 3 weeks.

They don't work if they get filled up with dirt or snow. But yeah, if they are kept dug out they will turn most cows.

We use cattle guards with a gate on them. That way we don't have to clsoe the gate when we go in to check something, then open it again to get out. Cows can learn to jump them. We had one learn to crawl over it on her knees. They work good for the most part.

I have quite a few of them here. They work good, but if you ever get a cow that learns to jump it, you won't keep her in anymore. They're better than opening and closing gates in spots that you're going through on a regular basis.

anyone have a set of plans for building a good cattle guard. Sizing of pipe(s)? Bracing? How to set in place? Etc., Etc. I'm in the middle of the "oil patch" in Oklahoma, so pipe is plentiful.
