Hi, just on the off chance that one of you fellas may be able to help me.
I have a twin carbon arc system that attaches to my welder to give an electric arc (flame) at the point. It is good for heating steel or even brazing etc as I do not own an oxy/acetylene system.
Trouble is that I can not seem to track down any rods. I tried the normal carbon rods that are used for arc/air cutting etc and they just won't hold an arc when used together. I am told that I need +ve and -ve charged carbon rods. Similar to what was used in the old film projection units. Is anyone aware of a supplier of this type of thing? I would love to be able to use the tool again.
Thanks from the land down under
God Bless,
Rex

Sorry Gary, no. That is for cutting. This unit has a small jig that the earth and power cables hook up to. You bring the two carbon rods together and they form an arc. Quite good for heating steel for bending etc. Can be used for other work, not a substitute for oxy/acet, but quite handy anyway.
The same system was used in the old arc lamps used in spotlights during the war.
Thanks anyway,
Rex

Try to contact Forney. They made carbon arc torches and I still see their stuff in stores. I would have thought arcair rods would work but they must be different. If I remember right carbon arc torches are used mostly on AC machines and possibly DC straight polarity. Hope this helps. Dave

Thanks Dave, I'll chase it up further. I would like to get this thing going again.
The other easily available rods will arc, but not hold an arc between them. Apparently they have to be charged +ve and -ve that is cathode and anode type setup.

Thanks fellas, God Bless,
Rex

Good luck. Maybe there is a way to charge arcair rods? I've only read about carbon arc torches. I bought a bunch of grinding wheels at an auction quite a few years ago for $5 and there was a brand new carbon arc torch in the box. Never did try it though. Dave
