I"d like to add hydraulics to my B Farmall. Making it a "live" set-up would of course be nice too.The options I"m aware of are: 1)a belt driven pump off the crank in front re-routing belts. 2)non-live set-up off the belt pulley or PTO in back. 3)convert to 12v and use an electric pump. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I added a front pump to a B by welding a coupler to the front pulley to drive the pump. Worked really well for five years until the keyway wore out in both the pulley and the crankshaft Jim

Here's a thought, yank the motor out of the B and replace it with one from an A or Super A that has live hydro's. I bought a B once that had that set-up. It worked really well and didn't have cobbled up junk hanging all over the tractor. Just a thought....Drew

If you don't ever crank start your B, you could also run a shaft drive out the front of the grille. I had a WD-9 set up that way at one time... Dunno how you would mount to the front of the B, though - the '9 series has a nice cast iron piece with 4 threaded holes right there to use.

Good luck in whatever you choose!

Good morning!
I use a Char-lyn pump on the back of my B to run a rear blade. It runs off the pto.

thanks to all that replied...I'd be interested in more info about the rear PTO set-up. Controls, reservoir size, pump size etc. I'm reasonably mechanically inclined, but I haven't had any experience with hydraulic systems and to be honest, things under pressure scare me. There's a ton of stuff available on eBay but I don't know what I should be looking for.
thanks,
Scott

Get thee a catalog from Burden's Surplus in Lincoln NE. Then try to get one from Baum Hydraulics. Both have some fundamentals on hydraulics.

Northern Tool often has a good selection (at least in their catalog) of hydraulic parts, but no educational literature that I know of.

Basically you need a pump, a reservoir (which often acts as the oil cooler if larger enough), a valve, and some hydraulic loads.

I've used a PTO pump and it was fairly handy except that every time I wanted to mow I had to take the loader and pump off. That was not too hard but it was a bother. I went to a front mounted 5 gpm pump for my loader driving off the engine crankshaft and that actually made removing the loader more convenient but then I could mow or bale without removing the loader.

Its not a good idea to go for the 22 gpm PTO pump on your size of tractor. The PTO won't pull it at full flow and you don't need that much flow for most uses.

Some Farmalls installed a pump between the governor gear and the distributor driven off that shaft.

Its of benefit to include a filter in the return line to the reservoir to help catch trash in the oil. Pumps and valves don't accept anything but oil. Don't put the filter in the pump suction linee or in a pressure line. The restriction in the suction line will cause the pump to cavitate and no filter I've seen will handle 2400 psi for longer than a second.

Gerald,
thanks for all the good advice...Baum Hydraulics is especially good. Online calculators and downloadable build sheets - an excellent resource.

Char-Lyn made a self contained unit that fastened over the rear pto. ie pump, valve resivour all in one. seen them on ebay for 80-150 time to time
