I have been looking at a 93 dodge 1 ton straight axle. It has the cummins with an auto trans. Its got 189000 miles on it its pretty clean for the age but I dont know what else to look for on it. Is there anything that you guys could offer out there for advice. my plan is to use it for pulling my trailers and plowing snow. thanks Ross

I use to work around some contractors that used the Dodge, and others as well. The auto. transmission was a problem for a lot of them. Even on the gas 1/2 ton. Those with standards loved them.

Knowing nh I'd check everything they check during inspection. Rust under the body for sure. Good luck if you get it.

I just bought a newer Dodge one ton a few months back. When I was looking this advice was given to me about the Dodges. The trucks before mid 90's didn't have turbos and lacked power and used more fuel. This was told to me by a Dodge/Cummins mechanic. I took his word for it but I can't say that I know it to be fact. Might be something you'll want to check out while looking. Good luck.

they had turbos, but they were to small and spooled to slow. aslo didnt have inter-coolers on them and the radiator hoses went in and came out the same side causing some over heating.
the early frames werent strong enough for the torque either and there was a lot of busted frames.
they (dodge) changed the radiator, added an intercooler and beefed up the frame around 91 i believe and made it the truck it is now.
we have ran them since dodge put them on the lot and the first ones had every problem i listed, but they just continue to get better. my fav is the 93 3/4 ton 4x4 we have still, straight exhaust, turned and tuned, sounds like a mack truck, and will d@mn near pull what a mack will, just cant stop it:)

bottom line, if its newer than a 91 and looks good and seems strong, you won have much problems
