Went to Walmart this afternoon. From my house down the dirt road half mile or so to the stop sign at HiWay 50. Woman sittin at the stop sign wavin her arm all round. Left hand clamped to her ear (she's new around here) no traffic on 50, in neither direction, problly ain't been any for thirty minites, she's sittin there. I tap my horn, no response, I wait, I blow my horn. She flips me the finger (right hand), then ooozes out in the road. Same direction as me. 12 miles of hills an curves-55 mph limit-she's runnin from 30 to 70 mph no rhyme no reason. I finally get to town and head to wallywurld. I park, get outa the truck an, you know it, she pulls in an parks nearby. Still a yakkin on that cell phone. I do my little shoppin, get in the shortest line, pay, an go to the truck. She's gettin in her car too, still yakkin on that cell phone. I beat her gettin out a there pull in the drive an go check the mail. She drives past with her left hand lookin like it's been sewed to the side of her head.
Now I got one a the blasted thangs. Call me, I'll talk to ya-fer a minite maybe two. Maybe sumthin's jus wrong with me. Seein these folks walkin round a yakkin ALL THE TIME jus gripes my butt.
Thanks I feel better now.

At the college where I work we do a reaction time experiment. One of the variations is to have someone talk on a cell phone while measuring reaction times. They are alwaws slower whil talking on the phone (or doing anything else distracting). At 60+ miles per hour in traffic a few hundreds of a second can make a big difference. Of course when we're driving through farm country my wife always drives because I'm distracted looking about (or near an airport).

Never seen a person who could drive worth a darn while on the cell phone.

Every one of them insists they can.

I'm guilty of talking and driving, but it's almost always business.

The cell phone people that drive me nuts are (1)those that talk in the store (wallyworld)...not sure why they can't finish their conversation once they park their cars, 'cause no one in the store wants to hear it, and (2) the bluetooth earset "ultra cell phone" people mentioned earlier that you don't know who the heck they're talking to. They can be looking right at you but talking to someone else.

I think cell phones are one of the worst inventions of all time. Once one rings, folks think the world needs to stop, while they answer it, & carry on a 10 minute conversaton about some stupid topic.. I often have to attend business meetings, it sometimes takes over an Hour, to cover a few things, because of the constant cell phone calls. I hate cell phones! Recently., I was getting off the Interstate, only to see a car sitting stopped in the middle of the ramp. I probably burned several thousand miles of rubber off my tires to get stopped. As I inched around the car, I saw it was a salesman/exec-type, talking on the cell phone. One day a Kenworth will flatten him.

Bottom line about cell phones is that it's a distraction. Not only to the driver using it but to the other drivers and that's an accident waiting to happen. Now to the person who says they can do both ( drive and talk on the phone at same time ) without any problems they are wrong. It will always cause a problem, not always an accident, but always a problem. If you think I'm wrong just do this. Ride down the road with a friend, don't turn the phone on just have the person your riding with put it up to there ear,and hold it like they're talking. Now you just watch your friend driving and other drivers and you'll see just what I mean about being distracted and problems the phone causes. I have two cell phones and I don't think driving and using cell phones at the same time should be aloud. As for times and places other then while driving that people use the phones, I wouldn't but I'm not the one doing it and looking stupid. Just my little opinion.

When you see one of the idiots with a phone in their ear while they're in the driver's seat and the vehicle is moving, honk your horn at 'em. I don't mean just a little beep I mean a good 3-5 second HONK. Let them know you're there. When one of the idiots whines about it tell them that they were talking on the phone, not paying attention to driving, and you were helping to prevent an accident by making them aware of other vehicles. If we could get enough people to do this we could make it too noisy for the idiots to hear their phonecall.

I personly feel it should be illeagle to talk on them while driving what so da- important or the big hurry that you can't get off the highway if they are seen by law enforcement i think they should lose there drivers license for a year. That goe's for me to.leave the Da- thing on the dash untill that emergency pleace!!!!! !!.

Cause the road is rite skinny there. Maybe one an a half cars wide. If you're at that stop sign an a neighbor wants to turn in on it you gotta back up so he can turn in, or he has to wait for you to pull out.
An please don't make fun of us Alabama folks cause we got skinny roads-she has a Florida tag still.

It is sad that people can actually talk about nothing, or just gossip and be a major hazard on the road. I only make calls on my cell if it is important. I couldnt fathom yakking for 40 minutes to my wife or a friend. Most of the people using cell phones are the younger ones, 20s mostly, they cant shut up I guess.

I agree with you, was in Wallymart one afternoon and this broad in front of me talks on her cell the whole time we are in the line up, can't think of anything more rude. As fer the dame you encountered, make the pass and just as you are about to go around her, clip the left side of her bumper with your right corner, floor it and keep going, you can watch her hitting the ditch in your rear view mirror..that's exactly what she deserves, and she will hit the ditch because she only has one hand on the wheel

Alas, jammers are illegal. Verizon went to court to settle that one because movie theaters were installing 'em in some towns. I went shopping for one a few years back, and found that out when I went to order. The business wouldn't sell it to anyone inside the US.

So if you want one in this country, I guess you'll have to build your own.

They talk about nothing. I work at a school. The instant some of the kids are out of class the phone is in their ear. When you listen to their side of the conversation - you can't help but listen to their side of the conversation if you're within 30 feet - it's on the order of "Just got outta class, now I've got to eat lunch. But I should do my homework for (some class) . . . " And on and on about nothing.

I'm to the point where the mere sight of a cell phone will tick me off.

Talking on a hand-held cellphone while driving should be grounds for summary execution.

The problem is not talking on a cell phone, it's that most people have poor driving skills. I have no problem talking on a phone (I don't do it much) and checking my mirrors, gauges and turning my head to check blind spots. I keep a mental note of vehicles around me, and I use my left pinkie for the turn signal. You only need one hand to drive an automatic. I adapt my conversations to the traffic conditions, not my driving to my conversations. If I have to, I'll tell the person I'm talking to, to hold on for a minute if traffic is busy. It all boils down to knowing your abilities and common sense.

The problem is most who have a problem refuse to admit it there is a problem. That and people who think they have special skills and can do silly things and keep getting by with it. You may know your abilities but you don't know the other drivers abilities. It takes two hands to drive any vehichle automatic or not.

So, lets all give up another piece of liberty and ban them while driving....after all, it's only our liberty we're talking about right?

Please, no more laws.....lets think about getting rid of a few.....

America used to be based on the rights of the individual..... communist countries on the rights of the masses.....

The biggest difference between capitalism and communism was the individual right to the ownership of property....well, you see how the supreme court ruled on that right?

Please, think for yourself....sure cell phones are a distraction....but what about personal responsibility? I'm really sick of hearing "there ought to be a law".....we've already got to many laws..... and to many lawyers..... .

Lets keep our liberty!

Two points, Bill:

1. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING so important that you can't wait until you can pull over and stop safely to dial that phone.

2. YOUR liberty does not include the right to endanger MY life.

No. There shouldn't be a law. But as standard equipment on motorized vehicles, the cabin should behave like the Faraday cage it's supposed to. There shouldn't be a cell repeater stuck to the glass. That's just wrong.
