Extra battery on a big quad ???

Way Up Here ...

Got a question here .... my son has a newer quad, one of the bigger work types that sits 2 people side by side. Anyways, he finds that when the winch is really given a workout (like it was in the middle of a stream last weekend) the system can't provide the juice to really keep up with the winch demand. I think the engine had stalled when they were trying to get out and it couldn't be restarted so they were going just on the battery. Anyways, can another battery be wired into the system (in parallel) to provide extra battery when needed? Will the charging system be able to keep both batteries charged or is he stuck with the single battery? Maybe he can go to a bigger battery? This one with the unit is 28 amp hours (12 volt).

My guess is, if he puts another battery on the quad and uses them a lot winching, he will soon have to open his wallet WIDE to replace the chargeing circut. The little alternators in a quad weren't designed for a load that big and soon overheat and crap out!

I agree the couple of extra block and tackles and a longer strap would be slimpler and the battery would last since the winch would only draw a few amps since the load would be de creased .

Aloha, You could parallel your batt. but will your alternator put out enough? I would think that if you had to use the winch (uses a lot of current), stuck in mud etc, and the engine was still running, you may drain both batteries and would still be stuck. Maybe if you added a batt. isolator and used that batt. to run the winch you would be better off. This is a very iffy situation because I think that the batt. that it comes with is a little rinkydink anyway and is just enough to run the quad and nothing more. I would do some research and see what it would take to put in larger batteries and also if a higher current alternator would be needed and also an isolator.

I agree with Michael S below, Two batteries in parallel will substantially increase the reserve capacity, and just act as a bigger place to charge up at the same rate as it would charge the standard battery. The issue that would concern me is the duty cycle of the winch motor (minutes on/minutes off) heating the motor with vastly longer runtimes can burn it up. (seen that happen several times) JimN

You may want to consider any warranty issues when you are going to modify the system. You mentioned the quad is newer but not how new. That said if I were going to put another battery on I would set it up on a switch similar to the one in a motor home. You are working (or charging) a single battery at a time like the system is designed to do. If a battery goes down then simply switch over to the other one. You just have to go back and forth periodically to keep them both charged. When in doubt an external charge on both wouldn't hurt. HTH

What he probably should do is pick up a pulley block to multiply the pulling force along with a tow strap to make up for the lost cable distance. He should research safe winching techniques as well. He also needs to learn how to judge distance, depth and general trail and stream crossing conditions BEFORE he plunges in. (I hope he wasn't in a trout stream). The extra battery might help but I think he can find ways around that at less cost. I don't want to judge atv's because I own one but it's people who think they'll go over or thru anything that tear up wetlands and streams and get trails closed for those of us who know better.

I don't see why not as long as you have a good place to set the extra battery where it will be protected and secured properly.
