I have a JD 1207 moco with sickle bar. When I try to cut hay it will not cut cleanly and it drags the grass down instead of cutting it. I have tried to raise the machine and lower it. It have tried different speeds with no help. It has new blades. What am I doing wrong or what is wrong? I am trying to go back and recut some places but that is beginning to be a pain. The blades are underserrated. Should the serrations be on top or bottom? they would only fit on top. It does cut but the guards also clog up. Some are new and the others look OK. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Devin

Hi , I have to ask this - You said the blades are underserrated yet you stated that they would only fit on top . What do you mean ? If they are underserrated the serrated side goes down against the guards so there's a scissors or shearing action , it's the only way they will work . If you meant something else , sorry I misunderstood the statement . If the blades wouldn't fit with the serrations facing down then you have some bent guards or something . A picture would be good if you could get one . Good luck ...Randy

I had a 1217 which is the same machine. I had non-clog guards on mine. Only time I had a problem like that I found that the belt that turns the wobble box needed thightening a little. Again I had non-clog guards.

I had the same problems with my Hesston 1070 MoCo, the problem was I had a broken spring on one side, it's one of the big ones the holds the head up located in the back of the mower, and is adjustible so it can be properly adjusted to float on the field. After replacing the broken spring, I adjusted both of them so that the head was level and just off the ground in the fully down position, and this fixed my problem. When the sickle is touching the ground, it does plug and doesn't cut good, so thats why it is important to adjust it just off the ground. With these springs you can adjust the height of the cut to where you want it. Hope this helps,

Kevin, what are you cutting? Mature hay and grasses cut easier than fine, short grass, fine grasses tend to clog up between the ledger plate and the section. Also is it dry enough? Wet hay or grass tends to clog. Your ground speed is important but so is your RPM's, keep them in the operating range. Anytime I have had problems with sickle mower or haybine it has been in fine grass or wet. What you described should work
