Mornin' Guys,

The trouble with getting old is (with me anyway) that ya always have the feeling that you're running out of time. :>(

Yesterday, I make arrangements to bring in a couple of loads of calves to put on feed this winter; just a young bunch of heifers, which will be the start of our little cattle herd out here in the boonies.

Okay, fine.

Then, I get to thinking, "Are we really sure that we've got enough feed to make it thru to grass next spring?" and one thought always seems to lead to another.

So, here it is the 11th day of October, forecast calling for snow, winter is coming at us like a freight train and you guessed it, today dumb ol' Allan is heading out to the hayfields to scrounge up more alfalfa.

Sometimes, I think I'm my own worst enemy. Where's my heavy clothes? Hope one of those old red tractors will start this morning. :>(

Allan

Nothing better than to go out and find a new calf up nursing it,s momma then you remmeber why you keep the cows around. Allan if you use a angus bull you won,t have any problems.

Allan , I thought you bought a set of cows back when the grass greened up . I`ve been tending cows for pushing 30 yrs and about Feb. every yr. I get to hating cows . Every yr. I say I`m gona sell`em and run weaners on grass and sell`em in the fall , sell the hay and keep my boots dry all winter . But then the calves start dropin and the grass starts to green up and everything is ok again . I`ve put a few bale out and I enjoy getting a good look at them but talk to me in Feb. , it will be a differant story .

No,

That batch is just in here on pasture and will be leaving sometime this month.

So, since we've been wanting to get into the business anyway, I'm buying these young heifer calves to get us started.

Yep, I think a comfort cover and an engine heater might be in order for the old Hydro 70. I remember what those cold winter mornings are like. :>(

That"s kind of a miserable way to get back into the business. I hate pulling calves.

Ah hell, we can slow down later...Still trying to finish up a few fields, made the mistake of counting head this week and looking at things that did not get done this summer. 20 below sure feel cold this winter. At least we are in good company....

In a few short months there will be some newborn calves, tails straight up, pogoing their oats in enthusiastic circles. The whole cycle makes more sense then.

Live fast Allan. I don't know if my dad will make it through the winter but he just takes one day at a time. What with his dominating wife and now he can't drive anymore, even if he don't last it will sure SEEM like a long time.

Yeah,

I told the wife last night that all of a sudden, this little hobby is turning into something that resembles a memory that is a lot like just plain old fashioned work.

We're supposed to be kickin' back and enjoyin' life. Right? :>(

Allan

Thats right watch what you do there or it will be work and soon it won't be enjoyable any longer.

My wife and I have been talkin of getting rid of the cattle so we can do a little more travelin.

Past few years thats where the moneys been though.

I know you aren't the travelin type.

But the cattle do tie you down a little more.

Remember when we were out there and I said we better head for home.

That was because of the cattle.

Its your life though so live it the way youuuu want.

Gary

I remember as a child my grandparents would or could never come and visit us as they always had "chores" with about 4 or 5 old cows my grandad milked. Even though I had several uncles in the area who would have done chores from time to time to allow them to travel they wouldn't. I always wondered why even with a childs perspective, they never came to our house. We did all the travelling. I did get to visit the farm more often if there was something good from it.
