OT, diesel moter HELP!

got a question for you guys, my moms truck/SUV is a 2000 FORD exursion. it is a 4X4 with a 7.3L diesel motor. when we got it this spring, it got, 21-22 MPG, or 18-19 MPG when I drove it.. and when it was pulling a travel trailer it got 8 MPG. now, same thing.. nothing has changed other than I changed the oil, but a month ago, before the oil change, the milage droped to 16-17 MPG when my mom drove.. and 13 when pulling a trailer.. now, it is getting 15-16 MPG when my mom drives, and 13-14 when I drive it.. and still getting 13 when pulling a trailer.. WHAT GIVES!?! right before it droped a month ago, my mom filled the tank in MI, and on that tank, pulling the trailer it got 4-5 MPG.. and ever since then.. even with it being 5-6-7 tanks of fuel later, it seems to be getting worse and worse.. and I am NOT a diesel man by any mean.. so PLEASE give me a hint or two.. Given that your empty mileage went down and your loaded mileage went up I wonder if your transmission is shifting correctly between drive and overdrive. I also agree with the poster below - anything above 17 MPG with a 7.3 is doing much better then average.

The fuel filter isn't going to affect your fuel-mileage - unless it plugged and then you'd have less power. And - if your air filter was causing it - the drop should be fairly consistent. From what you posted, you've done better than anyone I've met with a diesel Excursion. Most get around 18-19 MPG at best. My F250 with the 7.3 gets about 16 MPG at its best. I'm not sure I understand all you said - since you say mileage dropped - yet while pulling a trailer mileage went up from 8 MPG to 13 MPG? A few questions. First - is your highway-speed RPM that same as always? And, how are you calculating fuel mileage? Hopefully by filling your tank and dividing miles driven by actual gallons used. Also, diesels are more difficult to check than gas engines since diesel foams and often shuts off before the tank is full - and many stations only have high-flow truck pumps - which makes filling a vehicle likes your's difficult. If you are sure your figures are accurate, and RPMs are same as usual - then there is probably something amiss in the fuel delivery itself - which is electronically controlled common-rail.
Also, to a smaller degree - winter fuel with high kerosene content will get worse mileage since it has less BTUs - but not enough to vary as you mention unless you've been driving around the artic. Also - I assume power hasn't changed and you're not seeing any black smoke from the exhaust?

Lots of very knowledgable posters for those engines.

Be carful of the new style fuel filters - the cap and filter cartridge all in one piece. The first time I changed my fuel filter I used one from AutoZone, had diesel all over my driveway after I started the truck.

You can get parts for that engine, including the old style fuel filters (cartridge separate from the cap - use the cap that came on the canister with the truck) at International truck dealers, usually substantially cheaper than at Ford dealers.


Also, if she has not been doing it, she should be using a coolant additive in the antifreeze to prevent cavitation (if you don't know what that is, go to www.howstuffworks.com and look it up - maybe explained in the diesel engine pages). I think the owners manual gives the Ford part number, but again, just ask at an International Dealer and they will know what you need.

Change the airfilter and if that don't help then take it to your freindly local ford dealer and ask them .

put in a new air filter when I changed the oil.. sombody said the fuel filter might needed changed? thanks for the help! Tim Shultz

Sounds like a fuel filter to me, I change mine every 10000 miles, any longer and it gets way into fuel economy...
