With the price of wheat limit up on Monday are you guys planting more wheat this fall?

Thinking about planting some myself.

Is it to late here in Eastern Iowa to plant wheat?

Gary,

Is there any wheat raised in Iowa? I moved to Cedar Rapids in 1961 and never saw any in the 17 years I lived there.

Everyone over in central Indiana where I grew up (back in the '40s and '50s) raised 15 acres or so of wheat, but it was mainly a nurse crop for the next year's clover/timothy mix hay crop.

Biggest traffic jam of the summer was at the elevator when everyone was lined up to sell their wheat.

There is some grown around here.

With the price up there might be more.

I have a friend who grows about 100 acres every year.

His yields around 100 bu per acre every year.

At $5 a bu thats better income than corn.

My little county is usually # 2 in the state of IN for wheat acres. We are far enough South that we plant soybeans into the wheat stubble after wheat harvest which is usually the last week of June. In the past 10 years wheat acreage has gone down with some neighbors cutting out the wheat rotation completely due to poor prices. We are having good weather this year and crops are coming out early. I expect a lot more wheat will be planted this year in this county due to the price and we've got the time to plant it. In years past we have planted up to and including on Thanksgiving day. On a side note a neighbor friend told me yesterday he already contracted half his wheat crop for next year (500 acres out of a total of 1000 acres) at $4.57 per bu. and he hasn't even got it planted yet. He said he did figure that at about half of normal yield.

Yeah some here are talking during this rain of finding more seed to plant it all lol. Good seed is hard to find here and high. Not enough cattle around to graze it all but since price is going up now and everyone plants more you know it won't be worth anything next harvest. More cheap hay for the dairies maybe?
