I am interested in hearing from anyone who has repowered any old farm tractor. I want to try my hand at repowering the Farmall H tractor that I just drug in out of a field. I have heard of people who have put in Oldsmobile diesels, Chevy 350 V8 motors, or even old truck or combine motors. I have read some articles in FARM SHOW MAGAZINE and find these articles very fasinating. If any of you out there have done this, or know someone who has, please share your information with me. Thank you in advance

A long time ago I needed a lot more low RPM power in my pickup. Didn't have much money. An engine builder friend of mine built up and tricked out a GM350 to pull at low RPM. Replaced the 283 in my 65 Chev with that 350. It was amazing. My point; Choose or build an engine to pull in the RPM RANGE you need.

A 4 cylinder case diesel in a F 20 makes a nice package. Just a little faster but very workable. Used one from a 310 loader with clutch on engine. Fit very nicely. Everett

Call the folks at Farm Show. 1-800-834-9665. They are currently marketing "Repower Anything"- 30 years of their repower stories. $9.95.

Neighborhood mechanics put a GM V8 engine & 3-speed auto tranny in an F-20 - kept the original manual tranny too. Had to lengthen the rails a bit. Thing will pull a hayrack down the road at 40mph I guess. They mostly use it for blading snow these days.

A car engine has no torque or horsepower below 2000 rpm and that "H" isn't safe over 15 mph and even less usefull. Go ahead and re-power but stay away from automotive engines unless you are going pullin'. Might look impressive and go like h#ll but after a week of fun you will park it cause it has no practicle use.

F20s have a frame that engine and clutch mount on, short shaft/coupler to trans/rearend and front wheels and steering at front of frame- unlike H wear engine is a stressed membet bolted to drive castin and stering connected to engine, side rails on H are reinforcing /mounting members. F20 is relatively simple engine/trans package swap for old engine/clutch housing. GM V8 with old short shaft iron case powerglide(2speed) bellhouseing/front engine mounts is reasonably practical. 2000 rpm restriction, LP cam and added brake pedal assembly give a working tractor with a Hi/Lo range transmission. Farm show a few years back in Iowa. Ford model A type engine and manual trans looks like a normal tractor-like F30 almost. RN

I put an engine from a Ford Pinto into a 1946 Avery A. Bad idea. Way too many rpms available in the ford engine.

Theres a guy in Lapeer Mi who put a 3 cylinder Kubota diesel in an Avery. Nice swap. Looked like it belonged there.

Just because the RPM's are "available" from a car engine used in a conversion doesn't mean they have to be used.

A REAL tractor engine conversion, well done, will include a governor. If desired, the replacement engine could be governed to the speed of the original engine. (Been there, done that!)

Aoto engines operate at much higher RPM.....trying to operate between 500 and 2000 would be very hard to do...Use the engine trans in low gear in front of tractor trans..Don

Theres a reason those pinto engines turn the revs Bob, they, like most overhead cam engines just dont make much power at lower (500-1500) RPM's doesnt seem like a good choice of engines to me either, Id think that something along the lines of a 4 cyl Cont. or Herc would work out better.
