Saturday evening we were going to Waterloo for groceries and came upon a field with 6 large green combines operating in the same field. I don't think I ever saw more than 2 in one field before. I heard that the guy who just sold his seed business is farming 50,000 acres in this part of the state.

I guess you have to take some out for towns, highways, non-tillable land, but Iowa is 35,760,000 acres (55,875 square miles), so the 50,000 acres would be 0.14% of the land area in Iowa. Lots of land to farm, but not much in the whole scheme of things, eh?

Well, if you figure 640 acres to a Section, 50K acres is 78.125 sq mi per my hand Sharp, assuming, of course, that a Section is a sq mi...but sections don't always have 640 acres, or shouldn't, because of the curvature of the Earth, but they often showed some as a full 640 and shorted some down the line to compensate, which is why some of the Gov't surveys come out with those skinny little Sections, or part Sections numbered in Gov't Lots...unless, of course, there's pieces taken out for navigable waterways and such, leaving the quarter quarters remaining in Gov't Lots...oh, he--, just figure 78 sq mi, more or less...

a sguare mile is 640 acres no matter how many waterways or other land marks are in it.
So like you said, he farms 78.1 square mile, undoubtably not in one place but its 78.1

Is that too much land for a 5ft bush hog or should I get a bigger one?
