I HAVE A WD THAT IS CONVERTED TO ALL 12V EXC. STARTER ACCORDING TO WIRING DIAGRAM I GOT OFF THIS SITE.NEW ALT,SWITCH.IT RECENTLY STARTING CHUGGING THEN QUIT RUNNING AFTER A FEW MINUTES.I REPLACED DIST. CAP,POINTS, ROTOR;DRAINED GAS AND SEDIMENT BOWL,AND IT STILL DOES IT.THE COIL SEEMS TO GET WARM AND I TRIED A DIFFERENT (USED) ONE AND THEN PUT A RESISTER INLINE BEFORE COIL, BUT NOTHING HELPS.IT STARTS AND RUNS GOOD AT FIRST,EVEN AT HIGHER RPM"S BUT THEN JUST GHUG CHUG CHUG AND QUITS.IT USUALLY STARTS RIGHT UP AGAIN AND IDLES BUT DOESN"T HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO MOVE ITSELF.PLEASE HELP WITH ANY IDEAS.GAS RUNS FINE THRU FUEL LINE ALSO!

Try this:

1, type in regular case.. it's easier for us to read.

2, try a new condensor.

3, get a real 12v coil and quit monkeying around with used coils, or 6v coils and a resistor. NAPA IC14SB is a round can universal replacement 12v coil.. doesn't need any external resistance.. etc.

I vote with OLD on this one.

I had a JD A that gave the same symptoms once. Would Idle bueatifully but once you put the throttle to it would pop and bang and die. Went through the carb and then the Dist. couldn't find anything wrong but things worked after the DIST. The condensor was replaced as part of that.

Try it nothing to lose.

Just a stab in the dark. Have someone stand beside the carbureter and, after you start it, have that someone tap the carbureter bowl with a stick or small tool. If that tapping will keep it running, then you have a sticky needle valve. The carb floats push the vertically mounted needle valve up into the closed position when bowl fills up. That stops flow from tank. As tractor burns fuel, float descends but sometimes needle valve remains closed and when fuel in bowl is gone, engine quits. Seems to be a common problem. Probably because of underuse and volatile gas which evaporates faster, leaving gummy residue.

I nothiced you didn;t say you replace the condenser. You may have a condenser that is going bad. When it dies what does the spark look like?? If its not a brite blue spark then you have a problem in the ignition.

Does pulling the choke out help any? My guess would be not getting enough air, carb not set right or crud in the carb. Sounds like you have ruled out all electrical problems and if it will idle but doesn"t have any power, would go with a fuel or air starvation.
