I've not had a tractor hauled for over a year, and with the recent reduction in fuel cost, what is a reasonable cost($/loaded mile)??? It is a local (eastern Iowa) 50 mile haul. Your help appreciated.

50 miles - 15 to 20 mph - about 3 hours - get up early - have it home by noon

3 hours of diesel - depending on tractor size could get it home for $30

We often haul tractors and other ag equipment short haul as part of our wrecker business. $40.00 plus $2.25 per mile. BUT we're in west Alabama and limited to about 8,000 pounds. Depending on how much tractor you got maybe a wrecker service with a larger roll back could help you.

If i was still haulen stuff that 50 mile run would still cost ya around 225 bucks for the one way . Because it is a short haul and i would have to make the return empty and diesel is still up there and the cost of wear and tare is up . The days of haulen cheap are realy dead and gone . Ya can't by a new one tone for 10000 bucks not even 20 will get ya a new work truck and if ya go with a large car then ya got all the taxes ya have to pay plus the insurance . And people would always say well i can do it cheaper , Well knock your socks off and go for it go and lay down 35000 for the truck then for a GODD trailer that is well built for runnen the roads and i and not talken about the cheap ones you will have over 6500 in a good one spced for this then add in the price of insurance per year plus the maintance on a truck that you are going to do this haulen with then add it all up per month then devide by the miles ya run and you will be SHOCKED .

The best prices I have seen are from people you don`t think about, local tractor dealers are great if they are going one way empty, another are auctioneers when they have a spring or fall sale. I have goten them to move a tractor pretty cheap for cash money(NO CHECKS)

It takes the same amount of time to load and unload for a short haul as a long one. Don't expect a very good rate for a 50 mile trip.

The hauling cost I was quoted recently was $2.50 - $3.50 a loaded mile.

Funny how that has continued to spiral up while the cost of fuel has dropped so much. Wonder why that is? I was getting quotes from $1-$1.50 per loaded mile back when the gas was hovering around $2.25 and then saw it go up to $2 per mile when the gas climbed close to $3. Now gas is just over $2 here and the hauling is still high. To answer the original question, though, a lot of truckers are going to want a minimum for short runs. I just paid a guy $300 for a short run for a tractor that ran around 5 ton. Had some trouble off loading, engine stopped abruptly and would not turn over again (groan). He ran home and came back with a huge front loader and put the tractor where I wanted it. I figured it wasn't a bad price considering all he had to do to get me off his trailer. I'd hate to get into fuel costs on that big loader.
