My JD 5020 did the same thing. It also has a Roosamaster pump. I replaced fuel filters, and the fuel pump with no success. It was the bleed fitting on the top of the pump plugged with very small pieces. This fitting is connected to a line that goes to the tank. The fitting is a check valve with a glass ball. I cleaned it and was on my way again, but it plugged again. Now I am facing a pump rebuild. If you keep running it there is a chance of major pump failure. I don,t think it will happen right away. Stan

That's the problem I was talking about. The fitting - technically - is a "housing pressure regulator" but that style is not used in all applications (glass ball and spring in fitting). Very often the machines will run for years once the fitting is bored out - but that's a crap-shoot. With the plastic disk broken - the pump has metal rivets hammering all of the time. Sooner or later - some metal will come loose and run through the pump and probably ruin it beyond a cost-effective repair. Again - to just reseal and replace the ring you've got $20 in parts - and to elimated it forever - another extra $40. If you send the pump to a shop - ask what they will do. Not all shops update the pump unless asked.

What do you mean by "seems to be getting fuel to the injectors?" Did you unhook an injector line and look? A diesel needs enough compression to create ignition, air, and enough fuel at the correct time - in order to fire. Since your's was running, but slowly died - without any tragic events inside the engine that you know of - it's likely you've simply got some injection pump problems - especially with your Roosamaster/Stanadyne rotary-type pump. Unless it's been updated, that pump is prone to failure - which results in the engine slowing down, and then crapping out. Usually, it will start right up again after shut-down - until the pump-housing over-pressurizes and it again, craps out. The common failure point is the rubber/plastic vibration dampener on the governor flyweight ring. When it falls apart, it plugs the fuel-exit fitting on top of the pump. Yanking the fitting out and running it without is a good test (but a little sloppy). If this seems to be your problem, you can either rebuild the pump completely - or just fix what is wrong. To just reseal the pump and replace the failed hunk of plastic - parts cost is around $20 - and it takes about two hours to take the pump all apart, and put it back together (I'm not including removal and re-installation of the pump). You can also update - and elimate the plastic with a new EID kit - for an extra $40. Your problems could also be elsewhere - but that pump is known for the problem I described. It was used by Deere, IH, Ford, AC, Case, and many other tractors as well as Ford and Chevy trucks until the mid-80s. Around 85 or 86 - the new EID was installed as OEM.

Jon,

Have you tried to pull start it yet? Sometimes it is a bugger to get 'em going after changing filters.

When they "slow down", it usually means that they are running out of fuel like you suspected. If they "speed up", usually means that there is air getting in the system.

Like someone else said, don't forget your air filter, it also can stop 'em cold.

I'd check for:

1. Fuel or air restriction
2. Injection pump has gone south
3. Compression is low; engine needs overhauled

Allan

Jon,
Make sure that enough air is getting into the
cylinders.

Not sure if this would help, but I had a Ford 5000 diesel, that would start and die soon after. Always was a great runner. We changed the fuel filter and no difference. I found a few hairline cracks in the rubber fuel lines, and there was a bee wedged in the petcock that was blocking the fuel from going through the system. After changing the lines, and cleaning the petcock, there was no more problems. Took a while to figure it out. Good Luck.

If you are getting fuel to the injectors, start with the timing. I guess it could have slipped though very unusal. Next would be some way dirt got into the injectors, and they are not working. After that I would be stumped.

I have a 580 CK and when I run it out of fuel I blead it the best I can. Then I pull start the sucker. Takes all the messing around out of starting stopping blead more then starting again and then blead again with a battery charge in there somewhere. I do blead at the lines to the injectors and make sure fuel is comming out the lines. Same with my 961 Ford. At 3 bucks a gallon for some reason then run out of fuel more than they did at .70. I see it a 2.499 yeaterday.
