Hi Gang;
This is the plot done by the guy with the Kv match plough who competes successfuuly over a wide area.
Notice that this field is quite "light" soil, and was difficult to turn over - several ploughs bulldozed the soil. The grain stubble had died back and was wet, which made it difficult to bury completely. It was important to have the disc coulter and the skimmers set accurately.
The stones were a serious problem for everyone, they will cause the plough to jump out of the ground or move the plough sideways so spoiling the work.
Cheers David

David,

Do you know a Don MacMillan, of Devizes, Wiltshire?

Stan

Hi Dave nice ploughing photos. The type of ploughing in the photos is known as World Style. This is the class that ploughmen win their countrys national ploughing matches with thn they go on to plough in next years world contest. In 1904 a good friend of mine won the UK nationals with a 1972 IH 574 hydro tractor he bought of me and a plough he designed and built himself not bad for a 71 yera old. I ran a ploughing match to rase some money for his expences to get him to the world match in Chezck republic were he came seventh out of 28 competitors. I forgot to mention his name Don Woonhouse. Nice photos! Have you any idea just what the judges look for or what they get marked down for? Would be interesting to know just what they are striving to achieve that they would go to such extremes designing these special plows for. Thank You.

I attend ploughung matches most weekends this time of the year. The judge gives marks out of 20 for 8 diffrent wliments. He woult mark the start in the picture at 12 as the first 2 furrows are to high and his last 2 furrows he ploughed are not matching the rest of his start. MJ

In Ireland, and I assume in Wales also, the term "rock" is reserved for really large stones. We would tend to call this large stone a boulder. We use the term "gravel",they use "pebbles".

Probably because the place is so regulated by government bureaucrats that know best what is good for you. They even have to license plate their tractors. As for owning land? Most farmers are renters to land barons whose family have owned the land for centuries.
