Don't you just love the sound of a tractor coming down the road pulling about 4 empty gravity flow wagons? Ain't no other sound quite like it.

Smell of fall in reply to 730virgil, 09-29-2006 10:01:45
Around my parts there is a distinct "smell" of fall. It is the smoke coming out of the curing barns from the hardwood fires that are curing out the many tobacco crops. I can count 12 within a mile of my place smoking now (2 are mine). The smell means a highly labor intensive crop is harvested which is a big sense of relief. Happy fall to all.

Just curious what kind of tobacco you are curing and where it is being cured. I still cure a little flue-cured tobacco with wood in a stick barn. It does smell good, and the warmth of the fire feels good on these cool nights. Do you sleep at the barn at night to tend the fire? I do that with mine, and cook some mighty good stuff in the ashes such as corn and taters. Did I mention hot dogs and hamburgers?

Pull up a block of wood and have a seat. Weenie sticks are against the barn. Fixins are on the table. Help yourself.

Just curious- does the smoke take on some of the tobacco aroma? or does it just smell like straight hardwood smoke?

Straight hardwood smoke.

There"s nothing like driving down a backroad on a cold morning with a cup of coffee and that smell in the air.

I've checked. : )

Lots of folks heat with electricity around here because of low cost- but when we have a "cold snap", many supplement with wood- nothing as comfortable as a wood fire. During such an event last winter, a "citified" friend mentioned that the air was getting smokey- I said, "Yeah, isn't it great? Takes me back to my childhood- good memories." She looked at me like I was crazy. Maybe I am- my other favorite is the combination of cow manure and silage in the summer- takes me back to the dairy we sold when I was 12.

I hear you on the SAFE harvest. You don't see it as much anymore but, when I was little, we had quite a few one handed farmers...casualties of corn picker snapping rolls. My cousin ( now 55 yrs. old), lost his hand when he was 16. You can learn to live with anything but it sure makes life more difficult.

a friend of mine can't do the high 5 anymore he is down to the high 4 1/4. Please be safe and take the extra 30 seconds to let the machine stop BEFORE working on the equipment. In my younger days I thought that every second counts but now (at 27) I realize that my life and limbs are to important to loose
