I have a steering control valve that has the following information on it and would like to know what tractor or tractors it was used on so that I can determine what kind of pump was used to power it. The information off the tag on the pump is as follows:
Manufactured by Bendix-Eclipse for Massey-Harris
Part number 216896M91
S/N 7859

This isn't much to go on, but MAY be a "lead":

Is this a fairly light-weight valve that goes in-line as part of a steering "drag link"?

If so, 92 and Super 92 combines (and likely late 90's, and 82's, etc) used such a valve. Their hydraulics were CLOSED-CENTER, and were by Bendix Eclipse.

I will be in a neighboring town in the AM, and there is a former Massey dealer I know there, from that era, who MAY still have some old parts books around. I'll stop with the part number, and see if he has any of the old parts info still around.

Thanks Bob! I do not know what the valve is off of originally as I bought the valve and the cylinder at an auction for the purpose of putting a power steering system on a Farmall 300. The valve is just as you described, a fairly light weight valve. Do you know if the pump to power the valve was variable displacement? From my understanding of the valve, it would have to have been. Any comments on the steering system of the 92 M-H combines would be appreciated as that is basically what I will be trying to use.

If it IS the valve I'm thinking of, it's from a CLOSED CENTER system... NO return oil flows unless the steering wheel is being turned... and it wouldn't be useable with a typical OPEN CENTER system.

I'm off to check at the old-time Massey dealer, to see if he has any parts information, any more.

My guess was correct. The number you posted matches the partsbooks for the combines previously mentioned, and the parts books very clearly state "closed center".

Those combines used a Bendix-Eclipse closed-center pump, built into a boxy reservoir.

I have a couple still around, and will take a picture and post it, if I get around to it.

Sorry, but the valve is unusable on an open-center hydraulic system, as most older tractors have.
