The wife and I went to two auctions this weekend. Saw some interesting things sell wit prices all over the map. Saturday, we went to an estate sale where a son was selling off his parents estate. The implements were all junk. They had three nice tractors though, that I thought were plenty cheap.

-John Deere 2840, 3800 original hours, almost new rubber all around, Hiniker cab that was actually real nice, ran great, one owner. $7,000. And they had to beg to get that much.
-John Deere 2640, about 4,000 hours, fresh overhaul on engine, rear end, and brakes, JD Loader, good tires, real nice tractor. $8,000-
-John Deere 4010, diesel, hours unknown, decent rubber, needed paint, wide front, new seat, $5,000 and had to work to get it.

On Sunday, went to an annual fall consignment sale, locally known as the "junk sale". Old John Deere two-cylinders broke the bank. Old styled B's that barely ran and looked terrible brought $1250-$1750. They had a pair of rough old 530's that ran mediocre, one brought $4500, the other brought $5500! Decent bigger usable tractors didn't bring much, old rough antique's brought top dollar and then some. I bought an old sear's & robuck wagon gear that was pretty good for $100, and a really nice New Idea gear for $250. To top it all off, somebody stole my brand new B&W tow & stow tri-ball reciever hitch of the back of my truck. $130 for the darn thing and somebody stole it!

Those JD`s aren`t big enough for most full time farmers and are too big for many part time or hobby farmers. While the older tractors are getting harder and harder to find and more people are getting interested in collecting them. Thus the price of one market group is way down, while the older and smaller market group is going through the roof.

I don't know, we sure do have a lot of cattle around us here and it seems all of us run tractors in the 50-100hp range for haying. That 2840 would have fit into my operation like a glove, but I have enough tractors right now.
