Does a broken timing chain mean bent valves?

Yes it is you've got the gear on the crank then the cam and lastly the injection pump. I'd pull the water pump and equipment off the front f the eng then pull the timing cover, it can be done with out removing the inj pump drive housing or pan but becareful and have a look see. If you need to my email should be open drop me a line. But if not I keep an eye on here. David

As David said, there's no timing chain, only 2 timing GEARS.

never seen a chain in a 6.9L or a 7.3L and sadley enough I've seen a few from the early one to the last. darn good engine will still pull like a mother with a cracked head and 2 cylinders with blowed (totaly) intake valve seats but don't ask me how I know this. David

Dave,

I posted for a friend who bought (cheaply) an IH rollback with a 6.9L diesel that the previous owner said had a broken timing chain, I don't know anything about 'em myself, sure sounds like you do - so what would cause the cam to stop turning? Is the timing is completely gear driven?

Thanks for the help.
