O/T - Briggs Stratton carb problem

I have a 5hp B&S engine with horizontal shaft - maybe 10 years old. Single cylinder, rope starter, Gas tank is below the carb - gas gets to the carb by a metal tube extending from the bottom of the carb down into the tank. The carb fastens to the top of the tank.

Engne starts easily - runs smooth for 30 to 45 seconds and dies. the last 5 seconds you can tell it's gas starved. It will NOT immediately restart. let it sit 10 minutes, and it'll start OK, and run for 40 seconds. i can repeat this as many times as i want to.

I removed the carb, blew out the passages, installed a new rubber diaphram. No change in operation.

is there something in the gas pickup tube that is maybe faulty that is getting sucked up and closing off the gas intake? I rinsed out the tank and I don't think I have amything loose in the tank which is covering the inlet.

I'll listen to all answers and theories. thanks.

Took gas cap off - made no difference.
Filled tank to top - engine ran fine for 20 minutes, then I shut it off.

So, I haven't fixed the problem (?), but I know how to keep it running.

What next?

The gas cap has a vent built into it. Could be plugged or not working, and after the engine runs a bit, its creates a vacuum in the tank, and can no longer pump and supply fuel.

try loosening the cap and see how long it runs.

If you loosen it immediately after it stops, you may here a hissing noise as you loosen it. This is a definite sign the vent in the cap is no longer working.

The short tube deliveres the fuel to the engine. The long tube delivers the fule to the cup in the tank. I agree with checking the spark plug. I had a honda that would start easy and sun a short time then quit. If you ran the engine fast it quit sooner than if you ran it slow. I swore it was running out of fuel. I did everything I could think of to the carb. Nothing worked. Bought some fancy carb cleaner and cleaned a clean carb. Finally my son said lets change the plug. We did it started and has run ever since. The plug was failing after it reached a certain temp. Depend on how fast you ran the engine how fast it got hot. The 5 hp hoz shaft carb is pretty simple. Make sure the inlet screens on the pickup tobes are clean. Those carbs are not made any more. In fact the only flat head 5 hp parts left are the ones Briggs made and stockpiled for cart racing.

try filling the tank full to the top so that little cup is full start it and see how long it runs if it stops shortly it is the fuel pump or the pickup tube

Although the previous suggestions seem more correct don't neglect the sparkplug. I once experienced a 5hp briggs with a new plug that would run perfectly for about a minute and then short out. I worked on the carb, valves, points and just about everything else before trying another plug.

You should have 2 pick-up tubes, one short and one long. The short one draws from a small cup in the tank under the carb. The short one is for start up. It sounds like you are getting enough fuel to start but the long tube is split or blocked with dirt or varnish. Pull the long tube out, squirt some carb cleaner in it and carefully push a straight piece of wire coat hanger thru the tube (not the screen though). Once clean, pressure test it by covering the screen end with your finger and blow into it. If its cracked you'll know right away (if you haven't already seen it).

Good luck,
ll

Ya might try running some Marvel Mystery oil thru the fuel.

They have kind of a bad habit of sticky/varnished valves which will shut 'em off when they get hot. Let 'em cool off and away they go, only to stop again.

Just an idea for what it is worth,

Allan
