I had similar trouble once, would make a regular bale and then cycle again making a bale about 6" long. Solved it by tightening the brake.

As stated by Kelly your measuring arm is for some reason is not returning to the adjustable stop. Have you done any adjustments to the measuring(star) wheel lately? Check the bolt and bushing for rust that attaches measuring arm to trip mechanism! Is flywheel side tire over-inflated? Tx Jim

Check the knotter trip arm assembly, it may be loose or your break might be miss adjusted...if possible get someone to drive while you walk behind and watch to see whats going on...I don't know about JD equip, but on Masseys there is a roller where the trip arm rides, and of course there is an adjustment for this as well...It might be the case that your knotter trip arm may not be falling back down all the way...I had this problem earlier this year and it cost me two billhooks, knives, gears etc....basically new knotters..... :(

Good luck, I'm sure more will chime in here
