Was just wondering about Kubota tractors, 80 - 100 hp. They look like they should be a good unit. Are they long lasting engines and other components. Are their loaders any good for lifting large round bales piled 3 high? Does anyone on this board have one and how do you like it. Pros and cons of it.

The old M series that the current models replace have been around a long time and are just about bullet proof and dead simple to work on. The M6800-9000's are very popular here as the do everything tractor on an operation. The cab models are nice as the shifter is off to the side and most have a hydraulic shuttle.

I have read of one fellow using his for commercial logging and he popped a shaft in the front diff climbing a pile of logs. He was talking about pulling logs with both diff locks engaged to get them up hills and still spinning it so not many tractors would hold up in that kind of use. Was an interesting looking rig with full fops welded onto the machine.

I bought an M6800 5 years ago after the neighbors bought one only because they had so much trouble with a brand new New Holland. They just threw their hands up and traded for the Kubota. They bought the tractor primarily for loader work but ended up using it for any utilty work and are approaching 2000 hrs with absolutely no problems. They are as delighted with it as I am with mine although mine has less hours. Also, they have a quite a few hired hands drive it and quite literally "beat the snot out of" which shows, but hasn't affected it's performance. For further info you could look up Nebraska Test OECD 1803 Summary 501 for the M6800 and Test 1805, Summary 502 for the M9000 which is a larger model.

I have a M 8540
Nice tractor overall. I have had a major problem with it though it had about 40 hrs on it when it started jumping out of 3 rd gear pulling any type of load. Conacted dealer and they played around for a month before the picked it up at this time it had 80 plus hrs on ot and just letting out cluth would jump out of gear. My dealer had it for 4 weeks and kept leting on the could not get parts. So starting the fifth week i contacted a district manger and they deciced to set up a new tractor and ship down. This one has 40 plus hrs one it now it has not jumped out of gear yet but has a lot of movement in 3rd gear like it is trying to push out of gear.
With that said I had a M6800 for 2 yrs and did not have a mins problem with it. Erran

Thanks guys, will keep my eye open for a Kubota. You can get a lemon in any brand as far as that goes.

My experience is limited to two small tractors my brother has had.

First was a brand new 23 hp with loader and backhoe, small but handy and did alot of work for the size.

He traded that in for a new 30 hp machine, same set up. Overall, very handy little tractor, HOWEVER ...

Since basically day 1 the backhoe hydraulics have been "loose" meaning, when not running, the boom would fall toward the ground noticably over an afternoon, now if falls all the way to the ground overnight (no visible leaks). Also the hoe has power problems, especially when running about 3hrs, and the loader seems like it should be stronger.

The dealers first response RE; the backhoe boom falling overnight - "It is within Kabota's tolerances", and they were not going to do anything about it; this was a brand new ca. $28K tractor mind you. They have had it for 3 extended periods so far (tractor is a bit over 1 year old now) and still have not fixed it.

One man's story, but quality and service my brother has experienced has been pretty bad.

I have a smaller one, an M4700, which is the smallest of the M series. It is 47 gross engine HP and 42 pto HP. I bought it originally for small chores, but it has been known to run my Vicon 8' disc mower, which is supposed to have about 50 hp on it, it has pulled my Hesston 5500 baler which calls for 50-60 hp. We move bales on the three point and the loader, and have handled bales up to around 2,000lbs with ease. This tractor has really amazed my wife and I with what it'll do for it's size. We have had it for about 5 years now and we haven't done one thing to it other than change the oil and filters. It starts at zero degrees or below to feed without a block heater, doesn't smoke, doesn't sputter, just fires right up and does the job. I am hoping to buy another Kubota in the next few years to take the place of my old big tractor. I'll probably get an M7040 or an M8540 with a cab. Long story short, I'd recomend them to anybody.

P.S. we ran all JD's up until this Kubota, won't go back either.

The Kubotas are quickly earning a reputation of being a very well engineered and built tractor, and what is even better, there is a very large network of dealers who also have a strong reputation of providing excellent service and parts availibility.
