I have my internet, phone, and TV cable with my local cable co. They want me to install a digital box, so I can now have digital tv, plus free in state phone calling, and free trouble calls. This is guaranted for 2 years, and it is going to be less than I am now paying per month, by about 10.00. Now here is my question why is my cable co. giving me this extra service when they know they are loosing money? Thanks for any input. Stan

They aren't losing money on you - their equipment money is already spent and with the cable running past your house, that is called incremental income and for reason given above, nearly 100% profit.

Like the others said it is about getting every one on digital.

I have basic regular cable and phone line DSL. The cable company tried for a while to get everyone in the area to switch to digital.
I was one of the hold outs.
Cable company calls one day and says we need to make a appointment to rewire the cable in your house.
I say what????? ?? I am happy with what I have.
They tell me it is FREE and mandotory.

Come to find out we were messing up the reception of the cable internet with our old out dated wire.

Because they are converting their system to digital and want to get all the customers onboard to help accelerate the process. I think digital takes less band width then analog making the system more efficiant, lowering the cost for them. With bandwidth freed up they can provide more services and more channels making them more money.

A couple other two related reasons...

It's much tougher to steal digital cable (unlike basic analog cable). So in addition to bandwidth gains, they like that.

Eventually you'll also see the advertisers liking it as the set top boxes report back what you're watching minute by minute, like some of the digital video recorders do now.

And they'll probably sign you up to a 1 or 2 year contract...to keep you from switching back to the telephone company if they offer a better deal.

Stan, it may have something to do with the local telephone co. offering cable tv soon, in competition with them. They want to keep you as a customer. Pete

You don't want to forget that with all these fancy internet/cable phone services, that you don;t have phone service when power is out. Might also want to ask aobut 911 service, they don't work the same as on a stnadard phone.
