grow a few plants for own use, do actually use the tractor here, in late summertime the pumpkin leaves turn white, but still get some pumpkins, seems to be powdery mildew, neighbor is certified organic so I try not to spray

it started in just a few plants 2 years ago but this year all plants did it, I have another spot I could use next year if fungus can winter over

how long do I wait to re-use this spot??

went out tonight and filled the ranger with best pumpkins before the stinking deer eat all of them, considering how bad the wines looked I sure got a decent crop

printed out your ideas and will use them next season

Thank you!

A light dusting of Sulphur will usually clear the powdery mildew right up. Make sure you dont clump in on the leaves as thiat wil cause further discoloration.

Powdery mildew is cause by humid, dark conditons. I dont think laying the ground fallow will help as Powdery mildew is spread in the air.

Try to keep water off the leaves.

All of my squash crops get PM late in the season. I've always thought it comes in late in the season when the vines are starting to decline and lose their ability to fight it off. I think spraying it off helps, but keeping the vines vigerous seems to be the most important thing. Foliar feeding with fish + seaweed extracts seems to help. I've never thought of it as a problem though, just part of the natural decline as the plants are winding down for the season.

I had the powdery mildew problem on my first planting of summer squash this year. A Google of powdey mildew turns up a plethora of ideas. Consensus of non-manufacturers is that baking soda is as good as anything, and safe.

If you want to reuse the same area, you have to make sure you remove all the old plant material. Don't let it sit here over winter and don't till it in. The spores will just be waiting for spring to come. You can try to control the mildew by using a milk spray or baking soda. That way it won't effect your neighbor's organic farming. If you can control the mildew at your place, your neighbor will like you even more since there's less of a chance the mildew will spread to his plants. Have fun.

I think you are worrying about the wrong thing. Pretty sure PM is so pervasive that spores are going to be just about everywhere. If there is more this year than last, chances are the conditions were just better. I grow those monster punkins around here and it can be a bit of a nuisance. Doesn't seem like a hand sprayer with a little fungicide would be too risky to the neighbor. I applaud your concern, though. Wish my neighbors were as good.
