I want to plant Alfalfa and a Clover mix around my house. I leveled the ground around my house (about 3 acres) hauled in soil from another part of the farm, and need to improve the top soil with a cover crop. This soil is very depleted, dries out and basically is a pile of dust now. The soil packs when it gets water. I am not looking for a crop of it. So in drier conditions in eastern Wa what would be a good variety of Alfalfa and Clover. I can irrigate this but would perfer a low water requirment variety. Dryland wheat is raised round here and the soil down under retains winter moisture well throughout the summer.

I'm in south eastern WA. I plant Ladak alfalfa and just whatever red clover then have available. Ladak is what everyone uses for dryland alfalfa in this area. So it should be good for you too.

In the conditions you described Kansas Common, Buffalo, or Cody Alfalfa would be pretty hard to beat. Red clover, alsite, or sweet clover to build the soil. If you can plow it sweet clover then plow it under, then go with alfalfa or red clover. If properly cared for a stand of alfalfa will last 10 years plus, red clover 2 years. Just for your info. Buffalo and Cody are a spin off from Kansas Common.

Planting Re: I need guidance on Alfalfa and Clover in reply to Jimmy King, 09-15-2006 09:35:35
What is the seed aplication rate. And planting, if I dont have a seed drill what would be best way to seed in? And how deep should it be planted. What is the rate (time) of germ? Oh and yes the enviromental conditions are simular to the flat lands of Kansas cold winters, wet springs, dry hot summers.
Thanks

You should be able to use a spin spreader, then lightly drag the field with a log chain or board.

If you don't have access to a pto-drive spin spreader, a hand-crank unit might be your best bet. Instead of walking it on, you could use a four wheeler, pickup, or tractor - just sit backwards on the back end while someone else drives. ;->
