I have an Oliver 1655 diesel. Yesterday i was discing with it and suddenly it lost power, missing and smoking. I drove it about 10 minutes to get it home, and it missed the whole way, and any kind of load made a lot of smoke. Once home, I shut it off and then started it again, it started easily when hot, but still missed. At an idle the whole tractor shakes, ,more speed and its a little smoother but any load and it misses and doesn't have much power. I had the injector pump rebuilt about 100 hours ago and haven't had trouble since then. Any ideas? Thanks for the help,
Josh

I would not rule out the Air induction system being blocked somehow. Try taking off the hose to the intake manifold temporarily and see if the symptoms go away.

I agree with checking the simple (cheap) things first. The simplest thing that could cause a diesel to miss under load is insufficient fuel delivery and the simplest component that could cause that is the fuel filter(s). My tractor was missing under load last week and smoking when it missed. I replaced the fuel filter and now it runs like a top. I hope this is the case with yours.

Most likely the head gasket has gone between two cylinders.
When cold crank it slowly may give indication that compression is down on a couple of cylinders.
It could be injection trouble, but start on the simple things like checking compression, then move on to injector checks if necessary. Static checks are better initially, just in case the piston is in two halves or things can come apart if badly out of balance.

I've never checked compression on a diesel engine, this is my first diesel tractor. How do I test a diesel? I can't just unscrew a spark plug. Thanks,
Josh

No handle?
It will crank oddly on the starter motor if the gasket has a piece blown out of it.
Another possibility is a valve that is not opening properly, or a chunk out of one.
Just keep an open mind on possibilities and don"t make things worse than they already are.
Injection equipment does fail, but not too often.
A special compression tester is needed for a diesel (400PSI or more) or one can feed compressed air into the clinders, after removing the injectors and checking on the rate of pressure loss. The advantage here is you can find where it is leaking to.

With it idling loosen the lines to the injector one by one and see if the missing changes or stays the same. If it stays the same on any injector it is the one missing, it could be a broken spring in the injector or just pluged up. The other thing would be check your timing to make sure the pump hasn"t slipped out of time. You can also take a short stick 12 inchs or so, hold your thumb over the end and again your ear, hold the other end on each injector see if the sound changes on any of them. A good ear can tell if one is missing this way.
