My fathers cummins powered diesel motor home (2000) has a cracked block at 27,000 miles. It has a 53 series block. It is just out of warranty. Has anyone had any experience with cummins outside of warranty. It appears this is a BIG problem from 1999 to 2001 5.9 engines.

Be nice but fair and firm. The dealer doesn't want troublesome customers who are aggravation even if they make a profit. If a customers comes in all p*ssy and snarling. The tendency of human nature is to send him out the door even madder.

If worse comes to worse. If this is the Cummins I'm thinking of. I've heard tell of leaving the engine in place. Drilling a stress relief hole at each end of the crack. Grinding a bit of a groove along the crack. Running the engine with coolant in but no fan until it hits 220F of so. Drain the coolant and weld the block with nickle rod. Refill imeediately with hot coolant into th still hot engine. And re-run up to 220F without the fan. Let sit overnight to slowly cool. Next day check for leaks and bolt the accessories back on that ha dto come off for access. And drive home.

Like everyone else stated, this is a known issue. Call them. I would expect that they should at least meet you in the middle.

Do contact Cummins. If you don't ask, the answer is already NO.

If cummins tells you sorry about your luck there are some people having success with I believe its called lock stiching the block. If you go to tdr.com you could find some more info there.

Oh the ol "53" block. Not one of Cummins finest moments. Have you contacted Cummins about it yet? If so, give them a call, be nice, tell the the situation, and the low miles, they may do something for you. They may pick it all up, maybe half, or they might tell you to get $crewed, mainly it'll depend on you attitude.

I guess I see it a little differently. I would contact Cummins and be nice BUT my attitude would be subject to change depending on their response, me being the customer and all. 27,000 mi. isn't even broken in yet!

Getting mad will never help. I know from experience as we own a Dodge dealership and deal with things like this every day. If you are nice and lay out your case, they may help, but legally, they don't have to do a thing. Even though his engine is low mileage it is still out of warranty on time. They could tell him to stick it if they wanted to.
