I have seen that the 5020 came in two different horsepower ranges. Some say 133 hp while others say 140 horsepower. Which is the correct horsepower? If they came in both versions, then how do I tell them apart? Which models came with 140 HP?

According to Nebraska test nr 947, the 5020 made 133.25 pto hp, @ max rated rpm. The SECOND Nebraska test, nr 1025, shows 141.35 pto hp @ max rated rpm. I think you will find that the differences are whether or not it is pre 1969 or post 1969 model year. The higher value is the same as that obtained for the few, naturally aspirated 6030 tractors that were sold.

According to testing done in Nebraska 1st year production models achieved 141.3 PTO hp and 116.4 drawbar hp. That remained unchanged until production was ended in 1972 for standard models..... ...JD classified the row crop model which came out in 1967 as 132 hp. If a 5020 has front entry and adjustable front end its a row-crop model and is classified by JD as 132 hp..... .Hope this helps
