Mornin' Guys,

Last March, I flipped this old 50-acre cattle pasture upside down and have been workin' it down all summer to get it ready to raise winter wheat.

Yesterday, I hit 'er for the very last time with the rod and will start the planting process this morning.

As things turned out, we ended up with a textbook perfect seedbed; not a single weed in the field, letter-perfect texture, level as a table-top and plenty of moisture to get the crop up. Just couldn't ask for a better field to start with, but it's gonna take awhile with my little 11 foot John Deere grain drill. :>(

Anyway, now I roll the dice and drop that expensive seed in the ground to the tune of 67 lbs per acre. Sure hope that dealer has my seed order ready this morning!

The Nebraska-hailstorm-gamble begins once again. :>(

Allan

A long ways north of you I will be plamting winter wheat tomorrow. I find it interesting that with all that distance between us that seeding dates would be the same. Ours will be harvested (on average) about Aug. 10. we seed 120 lb/acre and only directly into standing stubble (we need the snow trapping to insure winter survival). It is incredibly dry here and mothing will come up till it rains (which hasn't happened in a long time). It is red winter wheat we grow, and when you get the right mix of weather and lots of nitrogen it yields very well.

11ft.Well Allan. First thing is to not go too fast. You will wear it out. Second thing is keep it lubed. And dont run out of seed in the middle of the field. It is time to plant wheat so dont worry abou planting too early or too late or frost.

Yes Sir,

I know those things. :>)

Neighbors are gonna call me crazy, but I swear I'm going to get another crop of hay off of 110 acres yet this year.

Had a light frost two nights in a row, but the darned dew was so heavy that it hasn't seemed to hurt the alfalfa any. Just as green and pretty as ya please and really coming on fast.

If I can get past the full moon this week, I think I'm going to be in business after a very dry year here. That 6" of late rain sure turned the corner for us. :>)

Ah it won't take that long to cover 60 acres with a 11' drill, just keep it rolling. I bet that plow was giving that 966 all it wanted. Looks good, send us a pic when you start drilling.

Yep,

Sure as shootin'; just as I feared. Called the dealer and the seed truck won't be in until tomorrow morning with my order.

Story goes that some folks actually take off on holidays. Just can't understand that concept. :>(

You should be off to a good start. I was reading old posts that I missed out on over the weekend. Did you ever find someone to haul that little 1020 or are you going to have to come over to North Carolina??

Aw Shucks!

Guess I'm going to have to can the John Deere wife present idea.

Was really hoping to find a backhaul somewhere, but only found one fella who can haul it tomorrow. But of course, the fuel cost is a deal killer and its nobody's fault.

He says he needs at least a buck and a quarter a loaded mile for a multiple load. That pencils out to right at $1865 to get the little guy to within 200 miles of my place where I could go meet him with my trailer down on the Interstate.

Talked it over with the wife and she says thanks for the thought, but to stop, use my pee-brained head for a change and leave the little tractor sit in North Carolina.

Darnit! :>(

Sorry to hear that, those little 1020 are just about as handy as a pocketknife.

My expercance with NE wheat farmers is they worry about, planting too early (or late), freezing to early (or late) january thaw (or not) too much snow cover (or too little) dry spring (or too wet) wheat too short (or tall)weather too hot (or cold). I'm sure by july you'll have a few more gray hairs, but the wheat will make 30 pr acre if things are bad and 40 or fifty if things go right.Oh don't forget the price, a few more gray hairs. Looks like we may be doing some drilling of a different kind in your area. we'll watch for you going by if we get up that way.
