I just bought a john deere 60,not sure of the year.
I started it and it made a rattle and kind of a growling ,it feals and sound like it coming from the fan shaft.
Is their a bearing up in front by the fan that would do that??
The fan doesn't have that much play in it.
Any one know what could be?
How much of a job it to take that off?
Thank .steve

We we first got our 60 we had the same thing at the back end of the fan shaft. After tearing into it the rollers in the crankcase air pump were no longer round and the shapes of octogons or triangles or something. We replaced them and put it back together and problem solved. However, I will tell you it is quite a job as the front end needs to come apart to get it out.

Steve:
Don't mean to sound quarrelsome, but are you sure it's the shaft? My 60 fan was hitting the cowling occasionally; e.g., on hills, under load, and I found a bolt under the belly, which holds the fan brace in place. It had come loose.
