Hey guys,
Having a problem w/ my mom's toilet. She lives in the house at the farm. The house is 26 yrs. old and the toilet is the same age.Split-level,full bath upstairs, and full bath directly under in lower level.
The problem is the lower toilet doesn't flush right. When flushed, you get a big bubble coming up from the bowl, and not enough power to flush a turd.Half the time water only won't go down.
Hey,I said,I know what's wrong-the vent must be plugged right? So I went on the roof and looked in vent to see nothing visible.Ran a snake down about 30' and flushed the vent with garden hose.No improvement.Septic is in good shape and pumped out recently
I'm a little cornfused as the upper toilet works fine.I'm still thinking vent, but not sure how it's ran in the house.Finished basement,by the way.
Any suggestions? ~brad

If the toilet is that old, you should think about replacing it. The only 1.6 gal flush toilet that I know works good is the Sterling (bought out by Kohler) You might have to look around or go to their website to find one. I have installed 3 of them in our church and they work great and you can get a handicap one that is taller. (its easier for older people to get up from)

I agree try pouring acid in the small fill tube for bowl in tank you would be surprised what the stuff will eat and will let come out you may have to pour it in several times to get it cleaned out

I had a similar problem couple of years ago .Septic tank and vent were O K.We have a mineral problem here.In particular since several drought years.I removed the toilet and could barely run a thin snake thru it so I completely filled the S trap with acid in hope of dissolving the hard scale. No luck. I replaced the fixture and if has worked Ok until about just about a month ago. The flushing started to slow again. This time I have found that the jet hole that assists the flush action was almost entirely closed with mineral deposit as well as nearly all of the small small wash down holes located up under the bowl rim.I dug out the scale and scraped under the rim and cleaned the tiny holes then, emptied half a bottle of Snow Bowl (Hcl acid )from Walmart down the seal tube and let it sit about an hour. Now it is fine , however once a week I use Snow Bowl under the rim and in the bowl.

The problem sounds like a local to this one toilet problem.

Both the upper and lower toilet will use the same vent stack if they are one bath over the other. A vent is only a extension of the drain pipe and both drains will be hooked together.
Since one toilet works that rules out the vent.

You say the youngest kid is 34 but what about grandkids????? ??

How does the wash basin work in this bath? If it drains good that points to the toilet even more.

I would remove the toilet just to be sure anyway.

Hi Brad, Does the wife ever use those "Toilet soaps" or those 5000 clean flush things? I had one that got down to a small size and got flushed down at the flush valve, than it got stuck in that little hole at the bottom of the stool,I evan took the stool up and turned it over and never saw it. put the toilet back and it worked twice and the same thing happened.finally I stuck my finger in that hole and felt the "Toilet soap" and had a devil of a time getting it broke up.Alas,it works just fine.Sorry for the long etc, etc, etc. Jim in N M

I used to work for a sewer company, what you want to do is remove the toilet, and run a snake through the bottom of the toilet. If people take medications, there stool hardens, and over the years a toilet can build up. Remove the toilet and run a snake through the bottom of it and see if this helps. Sometimes you really have to work it. Also get a piece of 1/4" flex cable, and put it on the end of a cordless drill and use this, works pretty good.

It really sounds like vent to me - could there be a sag or trap in the vent with water in it?
