I was taught that your word is your bond but now days if a person says they will do this or that you better not hold your breath. Yesterday a guy came and looked at something I was/are selling and he siad he would be back today. Well he never came back or called to tell me he wasn't come back. Is it that not one respect any body any more?? It really get to me and makes me mad. If I say I'm going to do some thing I do or if something comes up I at least call and let them know

When I decide to buy something and have to come back another day because I don't have the right vehicle or need my trailer, or something, I usually will write the seller a check for $50 or $100 to hold it for me. If they don't want to be paid by check, I give them the option of selling the check back to me for cash when I come back. We also have the understanding that if I don't come back, the check is theirs.

This type of arrangement has worked fine for me many times. It shows that I am truly interested in the item and is enough money to fairly well insure that I will carry through.

The only time it didn't work for me was when I was going to buy an 8N from a guy and wrote him a $100 check on a $800 purchase. When I came back the next day with my truck, the guy handed me back my check and said that after I left, another guy showed up and offered $1200 cash on the spot, so he sold him the tractor. I wasn't very pleased with him, but what could I do? At least I hadn't driven too far. I sure wish he would have called me though, my phone number was on the check. OH WELL!

Happens all the time, on the phone and in person when looking at something for sale. You should always tell them that "well, phone first because I might not be home", and then don't wait around for the call, if you're not there you're not there and if he's serious, he'll get hold of you. I don't think he's being dishonest, I think he just can't tell you he's not interested so he makes a little white lie. I think we've all done pretty much the same thing.

Sad commentary on folks today but I'd of been surprised if they did show back up if I didn't
have a deposit. In a case like that I only hold something especially if its advertised if I have at least a deposit of some kind.Probably was a henpecked guy and the wife nixed the sale and he was ashamed to admit he was "Under petticoat rule" as my grandmother used to say about such types.

Hello Old
I'm the guy with the Allis B.
I do a lot off bussiness by word and people trust me. I've build up a reputation that I'm proud off but there are a lot off people that you can't trust anymore I even have a brother in law like that and word spreads around quickly. It's said but that's the way it's these day's.

well, I just bought a tractor from an older fella. I called them on the weekend, and he said it didn't run, he had broken the distributor rotor. went ahead and look at it anyway, I got to talking to him, and I figured I could trust him, so I told them I'd go ahead and take it. but he said no, that he wanted for me to hear it run first.and he wouldn't take my money either. but he told me he wouldn't sell it to anybody else and if I didn't like the way it ran he would just advertise it again in the paper. so to make a long story short, I went back up there again, and sure enough, it ran, and sure enough, I bought it. But I think if it was a younger person and they got a better offer, they would've sold it to them, or tried to jack me up.

Best wishes to all of you, Tom

Yeah,Old, that is the way it is. Use to be that when you shook hands on a deal, it was closed. Now, if you don't get some money down and a signed page of the guy wanting the said object, you probably won't make the sale. I have had some people to pay down on an object and never come back to close the deal, even w/me calling and sending letters thru the mail system. Its as if they have fallen off the edge of the earth.
Now the question is, do I hold the object for the guy, or do I just go ahead and sell the object to the guy who comes along??? Life is full of questions....
Good Luck..... .

Old, I agree with you and it semms to go both ways. The old man (in his 70s when I was 18) who taught me how to take care of a customer in his plumbing supply store would roll over in his grave if he heard some of my current employers customer service policies. Mike

Yep, people are really wishy washy, they tell you one thing, and then change their mind in the next minute. I guess I am very guilty of being wishy washy with my old Mustang in my post below, but then I told him right, that it "might" be for sale, not "it is". It wasn't nothing to him if you sat around all day waiting for him to come back, so he changed his mind and just forgot about you, This is very common when dealing with the public. The fellow that looked at my car today said he wanted to think it over, and he thought either him or his buddy would want it and come back, but I wouldn't be surprised that even after he showed pretty good interest in the car, he doesn't come. He might also be one of those that will wait a week after you've already sold the item, then come back and get mad at you for selling it on him.

The way I figure it, these people have to live every day with themselves and I figure that's plenty of punishment for their crimes. WE, on the other hand, get to move on and never deal with them again! Isn't that a refreshing thought??
