Hi guys, I have a 6V Ford 8N and I"m used to 12V 8s. I"m afraid to put a battery charger on this battery until I know what to use with it. Don"t want to fry anything. Thanks in advance for your help-

It is fine to charge a 6 volt battery with a 12 volt charger but wire a 12 volt bulb between the battery and charger. If you have it wired so that bulb lights with the charger on, you have it right and the bulb will get brighter as you reach full charge.

I always unhook the battery before I charge it (or take it out of the tractor). My wife's dad hooked up my charger to the battery still in the tractor and fried the charger (he set the charger on the hood and it fried) You can also set it on the tire or a piece of wood. I just am overly cautious since he fried it, so I pull the battery, just to be safe.

Just got to Wally and buy a Shumacher 12/6 volt combo unit - then you will have one that works on BOTH 6v and 12v.

Does it matter how I hook it up? I was told the polarity is reversed on these tractors and that I need to hook the cables up backwards....

It all ways matters which way you hook up a charger. There is no such thing as "backward" with a charger. You hook plus to plus and neg to neg, all ways. Don't make it complicated.

My bad, I was on the phone when I typed that post. I don't know if you saw my follow-up just a couple of minutes before your post. At any rate, That's what I needed to know. Thanks for your help.

Let me rephrase that, do I hook it up differently than I would a standard 12V battery?

If you have a 12 volt battery in an 8N then you probably have an alternator conversion and that batery would be a negative ground system but the 8N was orignaly a generator 6 volt system with positive ground, Now the battery you have to have the correct post to each positave and negative but when you hook your charger you do not look at the way the battery is hooked up but only to the posts on the battery and put your positive (Usualy Red) charger cable to + post on battery and Negative to - on batery, same on that for either 6 or 12 volt systems.
