Rebuilding tine attachment on a 7hp horse model and when I went to refill the attachment decided to check the manual. The manual says to use only GL-3 gear oil 85-140. It also goes on to say that if it is a complete refill not to use GL-5 rating. Having difficulty finding GL-3 and was wondering if synthetic would work instead. Check with an authorized rebuild shop and was stunned when the repair personnel said he never look at the manual and just used whats in the drum - GL-5 rating. Seaching the web it appears the rationale for not using GL-5 is because of reaction with bronze gear.

Yes, the thing about GL-5 is when moisture gets in the oil it forms a acid that can eat up bronze or brass parts. Try other dealers looking for a marine grade gear oil that should be compatible with bronze parts.
